A ruptured aneurysm is the cause of death for a Columbus Swat Officer who died Wednesday. The Columbus Division of Police said Tim Haley collapsed after complaining of a headache during a training exercise.
Haley's death comes a week after the same medical condition claimed the life of Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones.
"Brain aneurysms are fairly common in the general population, but they're sort of a dilemma for us in medicine because if they rupture they're very bad--but many of them do not rupture," Dr. Ron Budzik said.
Budzik is a Neuro-Interventional Radiologist at Riverside Hospital.
"Up to 50 percent may die from an aneurysm rupture and only about a quarter are fairly impaired so only about a quarter of people will do well," Dr. Budzik said.
Studies show about one in 20 people will develop an aneurysm, but it's difficult to tell what causes aneurysms, according to Dr. Budzick.
"No one knows for sure and every patient I see asks that same question: How did I get this?"
Experts who have conducted genetic studies believe there's probably some genetic link in the DNA. Research shows they're more common in women than men, and very common in smokers and people with high blood pressure.
"If you're predisposed to forming an aneurysm, having those environmental factors just pushes you along the road to developing an aneurysm," Dr. Budzik said.
Budzik says most of the time there are no symptoms until the aneurysm ruptures.
"They call it a thunderclap headache or the worst headache of your life and it comes on all of a sudden," he said.
Budzik tells WTVN most people don't even make it to the hospital, but the ones who do can get treatment.
He discussed a new less invasive surgery that has evolved worlwide over the last 15 years.
The surgery is called coiling.
Doctors go inside the blood vessel and basically put small platinum threads inside of the aneurysm and fill the sac up which scars down the inside of the aneurysm. The procedure doesn't involve open surgery.
Prevention methods?
Dr. Budzik suggests mapping out a healthy lifestyle.
"You gotta be exercising, you gotta be eating right, you gotta have low cholesterol, and you gotta have low blood pressure," he said. "If you do have high blood pressure or if you're a smoker you need to get those things in order."
So what, Obama does not plan to let Biden have any say-so anyway... Biden is just the token white guy Obama bought to fool stupid white people into thinking he is not really a racist.
Biden could have trouble answering the phone at 3am, you must take these things more seriously, the country needs a Vipe President who is Medically ready
One terrible acccident for President Obama, one ruptured blood vessel for Biden- and we have the first female president-
Pelosi.
Another good reason Biden should step down now and let Obama’s handlers properly Vet Clinton
Nancy Pelosi- two heartbeats away from the Presidency!
Nancy Pelosi- two heartbeats away from the Presidency!
or one heartbeat + one brain aneurysm
This means Barack Obama could be one ruptured blood vessel away from running the country if he is elected.
Good point, and not to make humor of a serious condition for Biden, that reminds me of an old comedy from the 80’s, “Don’t Tell Mom The Baby Sitter is Dead”, not that I seen the movie, it was just advertised a lot
Doesn’t the Secret Service have orders to shoot if that happens?
Everyone knows that Hillary gets her checkups at the vet, silly.
