Most of my Chinese friends as is the case with many Americans, know very little about Governor Sarah Palin, John Mcain's choice for running mate in the 2008 Presidential Election. When they do learn more about her, there is one aspect of her life that will undoubtedly catch the attention of many people here. Earlier this year, Governor Palin gave birth to a baby boy despite the fact that doctors told her that he would have Down syndrome. Making the same choice in China is nearly unheard of. If a Chinese mother finds out that her unborn baby is afflicted with a deformity or other abnormality, it is standard procedure to have the baby aborted...

Chinese people are allowed only one baby, and will willingly abort female babies in favor of male babies. I don’t think we need lessons in humanity from the Chinese.
Sounds to me that China needs babies, guns and Jesus!
It’s unheard of in China because human rights is anathema to the Chinese culture.
Children in the Chinese culture are property of their parents, their sole purpose in life is to make their parents look good.
This may be a naive question, but why do we care what the people think?

Wagglebee ping your list
It’s not only unheard of in China, it’s unheard of among Liberal Democrats, for whom proper “Prenatal care” for a Down Syndrome baby is to chop the baby into bits while it’s still in its mother’s womb and then suck it out with a vacuum hose.
Chinese people puzzle easily. But, I really don’t give a rat’s rear what they think.
People abuse this policy as well, a Chinese friend explained to me today. When I was a little girl, my mother asked me to pretend that I was deaf so that the Chinese government would give her the chance to have a son. While her trick did not work, she says that many others have been successful at faking a disability and obtaining permission to have more children.
Well, that was worth the click-through!
I know you may not get this post in China, but, Dude, China sux.
Interesting perspective on the limited prospects for disabled people in China.
In a nut shell.

The Chinese are pragmatic and unsentimental to a degree that is difficult for Americans to appreciate. Especially I think to feelings-obsessed liberals.
Because some Chinese immigrants live here?
“their sole purpose in life is to make their parents look good.”
Theres a lot to be said for that idea. The Chinese I know and know of are disciplined, lawful, hard-working and ambitious. The statistics show that they are hyper-successful everywhere. There is a lot to learn from winners I think.
If they live here, then they probably know a thing or two about American culture, and therefore do not need to puzzle over Palin’s decision.
Thats the truth if ever Ive heard it.
“Theres a lot to be said for that idea. The Chinese I know and know of are disciplined, lawful, hard-working and ambitious. The statistics show that they are hyper-successful everywhere. There is a lot to learn from winners I think.”
They are successful in the US because they are freed from the trapping of their culture. If their culture is so great how come with 1.3 billion of these hard working people in their own country they are a 3rd world nation?
And don’t tell me it’s just because of Communism, they were a backward country even before the communists took over in 1949.
