Most of my Chinese friends as is the case with many Americans, know very little about Governor Sarah Palin, John Mcain's choice for running mate in the 2008 Presidential Election. When they do learn more about her, there is one aspect of her life that will undoubtedly catch the attention of many people here. Earlier this year, Governor Palin gave birth to a baby boy despite the fact that doctors told her that he would have Down syndrome. Making the same choice in China is nearly unheard of. If a Chinese mother finds out that her unborn baby is afflicted with a deformity or other abnormality, it is standard procedure to have the baby aborted...

Yes, but political systems do not arise independent of culture.

This is just a shadow of what the Chinese ( opps.. I meant Liberals ) want to bring to this country in their brave new world.
To: Tublecane
" This may be a naive question, but why do we care what the people think? "
Because, this is how the Liberals think also... this is just a foreshadow of things to come if the Liberals totally get in power and have total rule.
Our vote does make a difference... elections do have consequences... either for the good or bad.

Someone pointed out to me a while back how many more Downs babies are seen at Church compared to out in public generally. I can see Downs becoming a “Christian disease” over the next generation.

Sounds to me that China needs babies, guns and Jesus!
I agree, although I would suggest in reverse order. ;)

Most American believe that God will provide.
Most American believe that a person's life is valuable, whether they may have Downs syndrome or a PHD.

If a Chinese mother finds out that her unborn baby is afflicted with a deformity or other abnormality, it is standard procedure to have the baby aborted..The question here is what sort of test was the decision based upon? Simply blood test or full amniotic fluid test? Both my children were identified with potentially being afflicted with Down's Syndrome with the blood test. My wife, being subjected to high risk pregnancies and I decided not to pursue further testing for fear of risk to our child and took our chances. Is this the same decision that Sarah Palin made? Well, I can relate.
We were fortunate in that both our children turned out happy, healthy, normal but incredibly beautiful. We don't regret not taking the more invasive, dangerous test.

Not everyone in China has access to modern technology (especially in the outlying areas) so there are undoubtedly babies that are born with Down syndrome.

I guess John F Kerry’s ancestors shipping all that heroin into Chinese ports for the Brits has taken it’s toll on the Chinese mind.
Who needs Ketchup money when you can push heroin?

In the real world, cold calculating brutality survives over emotion, compassion and morality. Think of the Spartans.
Tha Chinese are absolutely ruthless and gaining more world power every day.

Yes, think of them. Where are they now? Weakened from the inside by internal bickering and infiltrated by enemies of the state. Then defeated by a people more united, powerful and brutal.
History tends to be forgotten.

People are the Ultimate Resource. There are no problems that cannot be solved via human ingenuity. I truly believe that a Free Society can tackle any problem that faces it without resorting to the eugenics movement!Amen!

“The Chinese are pragmatic and unsentimental to a degree that is difficult for Americans to appreciate.” What you meant to say was that “Chinese are cold and inhuman to a degree that is difficult for Americans to appreciate.” It's true. Most Americans don't “appreciate” cold and inhuman people, but “feelings-obsessed liberals” otherwise known as ‘socialists’ do.
They are very “appreciative” of social engineering of the type that produced China's One Child Policy which is about as cold and inhuman as social engineering projects get.
Only Mao's Great Leap Forward which starved millions to death or Stalins collectivization which did likewise could be considered more cold and inhuman.
