Clooney's Obama fundraiser in Geneva a sellout

GENEVA (Reuters) - George Clooney has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama by headlining an exclusive event for Americans in Geneva, one of the world's most affluent cities.

The Hollywood actor and director, fresh from the world premiere of the Coen brothers' comedy "Burn After Reading" in Venice, slipped without fanfare into the Swiss city on Tuesday for his first appearance on behalf of the Democratic nominee.

Some 170 contributors have paid $1,000 a head to attend a cocktail party with Clooney at a museum in Geneva's Old Town on Tuesday evening.

And 75 high-rolling supporters have spent $10,000 each to attend "an intimate seated dinner" with the 47-year-old star which follows at the organizer's nearby apartment, according to the American lawyer who organized the twin "private" events.

"It is fully subscribed," organizer Charles Adams said on local morning radio. "Actually most of our guests for dinner are coming from elsewhere -- people are flying in from Los Angeles, Prague, London, Zurich and so on."

Clooney, approached several months ago through a mutual friend, responded "quickly and positively" to the idea of holding an overseas event, according to Adams, who serves on Obama's National Finance Committee and recently attended the Democratic Convention in Denver.

George Clooney, President of Europeans for Obama!

Aren't there laws restricting foreign contributions to Presidential campaigns?

Clooney, Obama, and sellout, all in the same title. Sounds about right.

Clooney is a fool and doesn’t have a clue what Marxism is all about.

Castro, Stalin, Mao, Pol-Pot, Chavez, Hitler (national socialist, not a Marxist) - all are big brother government types with require huge militaries to enforce their brutal regimes - for the “common good.”

Again, Clooney like other Hollywood types, are fools and dunces.

I read alsewhere that supposedly all contributors were required to be U.S. Citizens before the contribution was accepted.

A few random thoughts of mine:
- They held these events outside of the U.S. to avoid direct press scrutiny
- Imagine the carbon spewed into the atmosphere from the numbers of private jets that were no doubt chartered so these high rollers could attend
- This not have been a wonderful opportunity to hold a 'Virtual Event' and solicit donations via internet/satellite...But then there's be no weekend in Geneva, Switzerland with George Clooney

Switzerland must be State No. 53 (out of 57). Germany was 52.

Yes there *are* laws against foreign contributions to U.S. elections! >;o)

And I sure would love to see that cold blooded lizard Clooney, going to prison for 5 to 10 years for it too.

It must cost quite a bit more than the maximum contribution for each round trip seat from LA to Geneva on a private jet just to go to the fund raiser. I'm assuming most of the $10,000 contributions go the the DNC rather than the Obama campaign directly.

“Aren't there laws restricting foreign contributions to Presidential campaigns?”

my question as well - how are they able to get foreign money into the campaign coffers?? I realize the small amounts coming from foreign sources by internet are undetectable, but these large numbers???

As long as they have an authentic Chinese passport, it's ok.

Only US citizens may donate to either a PAC or a candidate.
