Yes, the HOA rules are stupid, but the biggest idiot is the guy who moved into a neighborhood with an HOA and did not know its rules.

Many homeowner associations make up “rules” as they go. If it is not in the deed restrictions, the HOA is probably acting beyond its legal authority.

My sister is in a HOA. They actually told her she would have to pull up all of her flowers, as they were the wrong color and she did not receive permission to plant. One short letter from an attorney threatening legal action was sufficient to stop that stupidity.

ALL HOAs are dumbasses, and so are those that set them up, so are the people who PERPETUATE THEM.

Get OUT of your neighbor’s business. Idiots.

Where I am at, the meat of the rules are found in the Architectural Guidelines - that are NOT given prepurchase. If the HOA pushes too far, they’ll find themselves in Court.

Yah. Before I bought, besides looking at the rules I also stopped and asked a homeowner I found in his front yard about that very question and a few other things. He not only told me what I needed to know he pointed me to several people who did it regularly without problem.

But these days, there are very few neighborhoods that do not have H.O.A.s. I mean, I’m not spending $300,000.00 on a house just to have my rights stripped away. My grandfather did not fight The Nazis in W.W. II just to have homegrown nazis here telling you what you can do with your own property that YOU paid for. The H.O.A. is anti-American as you can get.
