Dobson on Bristol Palin's Pregnancy
ABC News ^ | 09/01/2008 | Jake Tapper

Posted on 09/01/2008 1:13:29 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Dr. James C. Dobson of Focus on the Family issued the following statement:

"In the 32-year history of Focus on the Family, we have offered prayer, counseling and resource assistance to tens of thousands of parents and children in the same situation the Palins are now facing. We have always encouraged the parents to love and support their children and always advised the girls to see their pregnancies through, even though there will of course be challenges along the way. That is what the Palins are doing, and they should be commended once again for not just talking about their pro-life and pro-family values, but living them out even in the midst of trying circumstances.

"Being a Christian does not mean you're perfect. Nor does it mean your children are perfect. But it does mean there is forgiveness and restoration when we confess our imperfections to the Lord. I've been the beneficiary of that forgiveness and restoration in my own life countless times, as I'm sure the Palins have.

"The media are already trying to spin this as evidence Gov. Palin is a 'hypocrite,' but all it really means is that she and her family are human. They are in my prayers and those of millions of Americans."

A woman does not become a mother until she gives birth.

Hogwash. I am the mother of ten children. Eight of them were born.

At the time of Jesus' birth, Joseph and Mary were married.

St. Luke says that Joseph travelled to Bethlehem with "Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered, and she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn."

There's no mention of a wedding ceremony between "his betrothed" and "she gave birth."

While it's true that the story of her virgin impregnation (Immaculate Conception) is a core belief of the Christian faith ...

The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary's being conceived without the effects of Original Sin, by her parents by natural means. It does not refer to the virginal conception or Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ. Many Christians do not believe in the Immaculate Conception, but the conception of Christ by the Holy Spirit, without the agency of a human man, is a core belief.

As I recall, an angel told Joseph NOT to call it off, as well.

Wow... I usually don't like how Dobson says some things, but this he said so very well.

Here's what I would love to say to Bristol, if I could...

I know I don't just speak for myself when I say "We love you Bristol". Don't let the mean people get you down! I was a young mother myself, and my loving husband and I have now been married for 16 years. Keep your chin up, and remember to pray for those Democrats who say these bad things sometimes because it's going to catch up with them someday.

I know many of us FReepers are praying for you, your Mom, your Dad, your finace, your little blessing on the way, and your entire family, and all your friends. May God bless you with good health, strength, peace, and happiness!

A woman is most certainly a mother prior to the birth. See the underlined.

She was a mother-to-be at the time, not yet a mother. The passage you underlined is meant in the future sense, as made clear by the passage immediately preceding it, "the child you will bear."

The Old Testament is almost like soap opera with the children born out of wedlock.
Ishmael, Isaac, et. al.
________________________________________

Ishmael was the result of an adulterous act with Sarah’s slave girl...

But Isaac was not born out of wedlock...

In fact Abraham and Sarah were married for about 80 years before he was conceived...

Yes, many! listen to Dr.Dobson & respect his opinions.
He has earned their trust over many years of consistency.

On Friday he said or implied he could pull the lever for a McCain/Palin ticket.

He is sought out for advice & opinions....Campaign managers know he is well thought of and listened to.

But he doesn't give endorsements much, if at all.

The fact that Dobson and his people did a poor job vetting Palin isnt going to sit well in the real Christian conservative community.

Firstly, Dobson wouldn't be doing any vetting, as he's not a part of the McCain Campaign.

Secondly, McCain knew about this when vetting her. He deemed it irrelevant to her prospects as Vice President.

She was betrothed, but the pregnancy was sure a shock to Joseph, so this was clearly not the normal sequence of events.

Yes indeed. No debate about that.

"The media are already trying to spin this as evidence Gov. Palin is a 'hypocrite,' but all it really means is that she and her family are human.

Unfortunately, the Left seems to believe that anyone who condemns sin should never sin, and anyone who has ever sinned should approve of sin. The idea of pure unvarnished humanity, constantly doing things which are objectively wrong, is totally foreign to them.

Uh, not when she got pregnant...In fact, Joseph was going to have her stoned to death...

But he didn't, did he. Instead, they married and Jesus was born afterwards. Mary was never an unwed mother, only a temporarily unwed pregnant woman.

A woman only becomes a mother after her child is born and she begins nurturing and caring for it. The woman who carried and bore me, was never a mother to me, because she abandoned me and my dad when I was an infant.

you would think that with a major hurricane hitting nola and the gulf coast,  the front-page news would be about that, but no, it's time to slander a conservative's 17-yr-old daughter.

the msm are scum, they're not supposed to write about a candidates children and should stick to the candidate's issues and record.  They're running scared and can't argue the issues.

What can NoBama say?  Nothing, his mom was 18 when she had him, just do the math.  Life goes on.

Gov Sarah Palin - just another dirty politician (a screed by Jessica Teel, bear lover)

Great Statement. Dobson has been known to put his foot in his mouth, but his heart is in the right place and this couldn’t have been said better.

Here's what Byron York had to say at NRO's "The Corner"...

Been talking to people about the Bristol Palin story. How will McCain's newly-enthusiastic evangelical supporters react to is? My feeling is that they are simply not going to be judgmental. The whole tone of contemporary evangelicism seems to involve a lot of non-judgmentalism, at least in matters like this. My guess is that the only people who will partake in fire-and-brimstone rhetoric will be the left-wing blogosphere.

As far as evangelicals are concerned, I spoke this morning to Marlys Popma, who is the well-known Iowa evangelical leader who is now the head of evangelical outreach for the McCain campaign. Turns out Popma herself had a child out of wedlock nearly 30 years ago — it's something she's talked about publicly in the past — and it changed her life. "It was my crisis pregnancy that brought me into the movement," Popma told me. "My reaction is that this shows that the governor's family is just like so many families. That's how my first child came into the world, and I'm just thrilled that [Bristol Palin] is choosing to give this child life."

I asked Popma what she thought the larger reaction among evangelicals will be. "Their reaction is going to be exactly as mine," she told me. "There hasn't been one evangelical family that hasn't gone through some sort of situation. Many of us are in this movement because of something that has happened in our lives."

By the way, I talked to someone in the Obama campaign today, and there is no way in the world they are going to comment on this.

Hogwash. I am the mother of ten children. Eight of them were born.

Not hogwash. The woman who carried and gave birth to me was never my mother. She abandoned me when I was an infant, and never bothered to look me up ever again. I didn't even know she was still alive until my father died and I went through his papers. I grew up without a mother of any kind. There's more to being a mother than being pregnant and giving birth. A mother is a parent, not an incubator.

The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary's being conceived without the effects of Original Sin, by her parents by natural means.

The language in Luke makes it clear the conception was "of the Holy Spirit," not of man. Members of the Roman and eastern Catholic churches believe in the Immaculate Conception. Roman Catholics were the first Christians, preceding the various protestant Christian sects by some 1500 years. (The first protestant, Martin Luthur, was born in 1483.) For that reason, I was shocked to discover only recently that some members of protestant faiths think Catholicism is a "cult." If you're one of those who do, I would not be at all surprised to see you disrespect the beliefs of other Christians who do not believe as you do.
