I don't approve of what Obama said a few months ago, but I have to give him the thumbs up for his response to Bristol Palin’s pregnancy. Obama’s denunciation of making candidates’ children the focus of gossip, as well as his pointing out that his mother was 18 when she had him, were impressive. Let's give the devil his due and laud Obama for taking the high road.

At any rate, it’s hard to imagine any 17 year old in this country NOT knowing how to prevent a baby. It’s not a matter of giving them information. That’s NOT the problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in many areas there are crisis pregnancy centers who will be more than happy to arrange an adoption and even minimize the mother's out-of-pocket medical expenses. While a girl who foolishly allows herself to become pregnant would still have to suffer some, it is not realistic to expect people to avoid such foolishness if there isn't at least some unpleasant consequence.
