St. Anthonys Medical Center in south St. Louis was closed to new patients around 3:30 p.m. after three walked in and said they had been exposed to an unknown substance, Mehlville Fire Protection District Chief Jim Silvernail said.
Initial reports said the patients skin began turning blue. Silvernail said he was unable to confirm those reports.
Silvernail said the hospitals ventilation system had been isolated, and people inside the hospital were not allowed to use the escalator.
A hazardous materials team set up decontamination tents in the hospitals parking lot shortly after the incident was reported to authorities.
The emergency room at SSM DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton, Mo., was also placed on lock down after three people walked in and said they had been exposed to an unknown white powder, Silvernail said. An official said two of the patients were in critical condition.
The Pattonville Fire Protection Districts hazardous materials team planned to perform decontamination procedures on several dozen people who were inside the hospital.
Officials said another person taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, Ill., would be transferred to St. Louis University Hospital. Neither hospital was expected to be placed on lock down.
Silvernail said the incidents began in East St. Louis and appeared to be related.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Common Name: 1-Napthylamine
CAS Number: 134-32-7

Date: January, 1988
------------------------------------------ HAZARD SUMMARY
* 1-Napthylamine can affect you when breathed in and by passing through your skin.
* 1-Napthylamine should be handled as a CARCINOGEN WITH EXTREME CAUTION.
* High exposure can cause the skin, and lips to turn blue. This reduces the ability of the blood cells to carry oxygen to body organs (Methemoglobinemia).
* Some related chemicals can damage the liver and/or cause skin allergies. It is not known whether 1-Napthylamine has these effects.
IDENTIFICATION
1-Napthylamine is a white or yellow crystalline (sugar or sand like) material which turns purplish red upon exposure to air. It is used in dye and rubber manufacturing and to control weeds.

Just saw a show on this...SILVER!
Could be any one of a large number of chemicals like Cyanide, Nitrates or Nitrites, aniline dyes or sulfanamides that can cause cyanosis ( blue appearance ).
What are the signs and symptoms of ricin exposure?
Inhalation: Within a few hours of inhaling significant amounts of ricin, the likely symp-toms would be coughing, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, nausea, and aching muscles. Within the next few hours, the bodys airways (lungs) would become severely in-flamed (swollen and hot), excess fluid would build up in the lungs, breathing would become even more difficult, and the skin might turn blue.
“doesnt cyanotic poisoning do the same? I think it inhibits oxygen uptake.”
Yes, and cyanide compounds can be a white powder. Remember the news a few days ago about a dead guy in a Denver hotel room with a large amount of white powder? It was cyanide.
