Sarah Palin Buchananite

Very good news from The Nation:

>Remember when Pat Buchanan ran a number of hard-right, fringe campaigns for president in the late 1980s, 1990s and 2000? Well, guess who was supporting him:

From an AP report in 1999:

Pat Buchanan brought his conservative message of a smaller government and an America First foreign policy to Fairbanks and Wasilla on Friday as he continued a campaign swing through Alaska. Buchanan’s strong message championing states rights resonated with the roughly 85 people gathered for an Interior Republican luncheon in Fairbanks. … Among those sporting Buchanan buttons were Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin and state Sen. Jerry Ward, R-Anchorage. In fact, Buchanan himself told me he was thrilled by the choice, saying as soon as I mentioned it: “It’s great for the base. I’m pretty sure she’s a Buchananite!” People seem to be missing the fact that this is a classic, Rovian appease-the-base choice.

[Hat tip Ross Douthat]

UPDATE: On Hardball, Pat Buchanan just said Palin was part of the Brigade in Alaska in ‘96

This is very good news. Buchanan did very well in Alaska in '96.

I think this was a feeble attempt to discredit Sarah Palin by making it appear she was some sort of right wing radical. Sorry, this dog don’t hunt.

Yep. I liked Buchanan 19 years ago. Not so much today.

Pat needs to go write something nice and conservative, which he does well. He need not remind us of his presidential campaigns which were an embarrassment.

Can't agree with that.

Buchanan has a blame America first tainted view of virtually everything. That and its the Jews fault...

I can only hope she was gullible back in 96 and has since matured.

If that’s true, that’s great. The start of this thread is just a hit fabricated hit piece then.

Read the article. As the mayor she welcomed him and wore his button for the evening. She is on record as supporting Forbes that year.

I voted Forbes in ‘96 in the primary, too. He had actually officially dropped out before the Tennessee primary was held, but he was still on the ballot.

I got my liberal ex-boyfriend on the Pat Buchanan mailing list one year. 1988, maybe?

12 years ago, I would have supported Buchanan. 8 years ago, I could tolerate him. 4 years ago, he was distasteful to my sensibilities. Today, he is nuttier than a payday bar.

While I think that Buchanan went off the deep end in recent years, he was still a respectable conservative in 1996. So this reflects well on Palin, IMHO.

No, she was not a Buchanan supporter:

RNC communications director Danny Diaz shot back at Wexler: “Rep. Robert Wexler’s outrageous attack today on Gov. Sarah Palin is the worst kind of politics. Instead of engaging in a discussion on the issues, Wexler’s smears and accusations are detestable. If Barack Obama has any intention of engaging in a serious and honorable debate, he will immediately condemn these scare tactics.”

The National Jewish Democratic Council issued a measured statement, saying her hard-line stance on abortion is to the right of most American Jews and questioning her support from the Christian Coalition. The Republican Jewish Coalition (also doing its job) defended her in a statement that makes no reference to Israel.

Most good conservatives were fans of Pat Buchanan back when he was powerful voice for limited and government and traditonal values. Most of us have also distanced ourselves from him as he gradually became the anti-semite isolationist that he is today.
