Sarah Palin: The Double-X Dan Quayle
RCP ^ | August 29, 2008, 12:22 PM | Dee Dee Myers

“Not again!” I thought to myself this morning, as news trickled out that John McCain was set to pick Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. Not again, because too often women are promoted for the wrong reasons, and then blamed when things don’t go right.

Don’t get me wrong: what I know of Palin (which admittedly isn’t much), I kind of like. I don’t agree with her politics. But in her two years in Alaska’s state house, she’s shown herself to be a scrappy reformer, a no-nonsense manager, and a consistent conservative. She’s also a mother of five, which in my book is a sterling test of leadership.

It’s such a transparently political decision, a double-X Dan Quayle. McCain made the decision to double down on his credentials as a take-no-prisoners reformer. But he did so at the expense of the more important qualifications for a running mate.

It’s not political to say that John McCain turns 72 today. That he’s a cancer survivor. That he spent six years being tortured and abused in a Vietnamese prison camp. Those are the physical realities of his life, and pure and simple, they demanded that he chose a running mate who is ready, really ready. That he put country first. Today, he failed that test.

Worse, when Sarah Palin falls short—and I hope I’m wrong but I think in important ways, such as her debate with Joe Biden, she will—some people will conclude that women can’t cut it. That’s unfair to Sarah Palin—and it’s certainly unfair to the rest of us.

I like Ron Paul. I went to NH for him, went door to door, was a poll watcher. Ron Paul, unfortunately didn’t win. I’m also a Republican. I’ve said that Palin was the only one to get me to vote for McCain (I was planning on staying home). Palin was the best pick to get Ron Paul’s people. We liked her over on ronpaulforums.com last year when we were fantasizing about Ron Paul’s VP choice. She won’t bring all of Ron Paul’s people, but she will bring me and others.

"She won’t bring all of Ron Paul’s people, but she will bring me and others."

Possibly even me, too.

We'll see.

Yeah Dee Dee, you’re wrong. Just like when the cops picked you up drunk driving down the street in the WRONG direction.

Yes, the liberals and leftists who have found their party split asunder by their identity politics now have to face the only woman on the ballot with executive experience.

You can already smell the fear, everywhere!

Obama’s statment has already over reacted in sheer terror! And the media is frowning and groaning.

This is their worst nightmare. Only some of them can barely let it escape their lips. But you can be sure it’s on their minds.

Watch their frowns and scrutiny over experience like you have never seen before. And I would like someone to say, what executive experience does Obama have?

Oh yeah, didn’t he help spend 100 million dollars with that “guy in the neighborhood” Bill Ayers that did nothing?

Watch their heads explode!

This is a great day for America and all those who love it!

So this abject moron admits to little knowledge of Palin but then compares her to Quayle? What a moron.

It’s funny she could have said the same thing about Obama being black. If he fails, it will hurt the rest of blacks.

it was a clever move but the RP folks are selling out pretty cheap if they let this, and this alone, win them over. It looks pretty trivial compared to the rest of McCain’s record. He is an extremely reckless man in foreign policy who has a long record of supporting more state power across the board. Picking Palin has no more do with McCain’s “true’ views that Reagan’s decision to pick Schweiker (who was the most liberal Republican in the U.S. Senate) in 1976 was reflective of Reagan’s “true” views. Both were motivated by the same goal of winning more support. The fact that both picked ideological opposites did NOT show a change in ideology in either case.

"..RP folks are selling out pretty cheap if they let this, and this alone, win them over. "

Ya, you're right.

Thanks for the reminder.

I'm still greatly PO'ed with the John McCain choice.

And I do remember that he is one of the insiders, even though he has something of a reputation as a "maverick".

Thanks again.

Thanks. I like her too but I think that the Schweiker analogy is the best way to view this.

some people will conclude that women can’t cut it.

And all the examples of failure are given to us by liberals and feminists.

attaching a picture of Sarah next to a Bull Elk she had just downed, rifle in hand. He had no response.

Because he knows she could kick his a$$ (and not break a sweat).

...then what are you?

I'm a responsible libertarian. Unfortunately, there are no Presidential candidates out there who have come even close to consistently supporting individual responsibility.
