Authorities filed charges today against the owner of a Rottweiler accused of killing a black bear cub in Jefferson Township on Tuesday. The New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals levied four counts against Teri Daubner, a Jefferson Township woman who authorities said failed to provide proper care for her dog and caused the death of the bear cub, said Matt Stanton, NJSPCA spokesman. The cub was the second animal killed by 5-year-old Max this summer, authorities said. Daubner was charged with two counts of failure to provide proper shelter for her dog and two counts of causing the death of an animal.

The first counts are criminal charges, and the second counts are civil charges filed on behalf of the animal, Stanton said. The charges carry a term of up to six months in jail and a maximum fine of $2,000. "She had a dog that had a history of being aggressive," he said. The charges were filed after authorities conducted an investigation into the death of the bear cub, which died after the dog got out of its pen and attacked the cub. The mother of the cub dragged its body back into the woods, where authorities were looking today to recover it, authorities said. Daubner was fined $2,000 this summer after pleading guilty to charges in the death of a husky in the neighborhood, which authorities said her dog killed on July 3. Authorities said they decided not to euthanize the dog, stating they believed the dog's aggressive behavior could be treated with training,

I could see these same "authorities" filing charges against this man if, in the future, the grown cub attacked this man's rotweiller and he killed it defending his dog.

Maybe they should just give New Jersey back to the bears.

At first, the story sounds like animal activism gone wild, but if the dog was running loose and killing things, maybe some kind of action will keep the dog from killing a kid next. The story really doesn't give enough details. I don't see killing a bear cub as worth prosecution, but I wouldn't want to live in a neighborhood with a Rotty that was killing things. I'd particularly not want to be in that neighborhood in a state that is so strict against people defending themselves with guns.

Put the damn dog down, and jail for this nitwit. No excuse for Rottweiler anyway. There is a difference between a pet and a vicious animal.

This woman is a disaster waiting to happen.

She has an aggressive breed, which has already killed another dog (and a husky is no small dog) and she’s been fined 2 grand.

So she lets it get loose again and it kills a wild animal. Just lucky it wasn’t a child it got hold of. And she’s got to be world class irresponsible.

I know if I had to pay 2000 dollars because my dog killed someone’s pet, I certainly wouldn’t be stupid enough to let it kill something else not even a few months after.

This woman gives rottie owners a bad name.

Greetings matthew fuller:

WE are SOO screwed, because I was thinking: Good Dog.

Bears, cougars, wolves, and coyotes are dangerous preditors.

The mother of the cub dragged its body back into the woods, where authorities were looking today to recover it, authorities said.

So sad. Even without proof an alleged dead bear cub, some FReepers even called for destruction of the dog.

Cheers, or should I shed tears,
OLA

At least the authorities had sense enough not to kill the dog.

I agree. When our mutt got into dogfights that I couldn’t break-up, I realized that if she ever attacked a person with such viciousness, this would be extremely serious. Even though I had my dogs safe in our yard, the vicious one had to be put down for everyone’s safety.

The cub must have somehow gotten away from it’s mother for awhile. Otherwise, she would have torn the Rottie a new one.
