Republican strategist Karl Rove called Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) late last week and urged him to contact Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to withdraw his name from vice-presidential consideration, according to three sources familiar with the conversation.
Lieberman dismissed the request, these sources agreed.
Lieberman laughed at the suggestion and certainly did not call [McCain] on it, said one source familiar with the details.
Rove called Lieberman, recounted a second source. Lieberman told him he would NOT make that call.
Rove did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Rove, President Bushs former top campaign adviser and arguably the most prominent political operative of the past generation, has no formal role in McCains campaign. But he knows much of the Arizona senators high command and has been offering informal advice, both over the phone and in his position as a Fox News analyst, since McCain wrapped up the GOP nomination.
His decision to wade into the vice-presidential selection process could provide Democrats fresh ammunition to tie McCain to the polarizing Bush.
It is also chafing some Lieberman allies and others wary of the selection of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
btw, this is an excerpt.
Too many “sources.”
Not one person is identified.
Rove needs to shut-up and return to Texas. This is not his choice.
If true, this proves that Rove’s brain is still functioning.
“Rove needs to shut-up and return to Texas.”
McCain needs to pick a conservative and Lieberman or the useless Ridge.
and Lieberman or the useless Ridge.
uh,
and NOT CHOOSE Lieberman or the useless Ridge.
Good for Rove.
Free speech. The story I read earlier said that Joe DID MAKE THAT CALL to mccain, it didn’t involve roe.
mccain isn’t my pick, i don’t like him, and he would be just fool enough to pick Joe.
I am glad Rove is TRYING to watch out for pubbies.

Bolton or Cantor would work for me.

>> Rove needs to shut-up and return to Texas.
Really? Why? Because you say so, based on a flimsy unsubstantiated rumor?
Ha.
I thought Huck said the opposite ... or was that someone else. Anyway, it is ludicrous that anyone had to intervene in such a boneheaded choice. I suspect this is a red herring, a RAT Operation Chaos ploy.
I agree. “If” this is true good for Rove. I heard somewhere today that Lieberman did tell McCain to take him off the list.
Way to defend the north bank of the Red River against all enemies, both foreign and domestic!
All this butt-kissing of Lieberman by the GOP is just preposterous. You didn’t see any Democrats suck up to Lincoln Chafee or offer him a VP slot or a speech at their stupid convention. It’s just mind-boggling. The Republicans should politely thank Lieberman for supporting the war and leave him alone. Stop courting him for God’s sake!
Get Roomey. He ties up the West with the Mormon vote. He should get Michigan and is a great speaker and attack dog for Biden.
I totally agree with you. It is inappropriate for Rove to inject himself into a decision in which he is not involved.
