Dem Convention Bounce Goes To... McCain?
IBD Editorials ^ | August 27, 2008 | LAWRENCE KUDLOW

There's no Obama-Biden bounce, according to the latest tracking polls. In fact, as of Wednesday morning, Scott Rasmussen reports a 47-46 one-point lead for McCain.

Gallup has the race even and indicates that conservative Democrats — including married women — are peeling away from Obama-Biden.

Has a McCain bounce occurred during the Democratic convention? It's not out of the question.

Sen. Hillary Clinton gave a strong speech Tuesday night, at one point invoking a powerful Reaganesque sense of American optimism and confidence. Good for her.

But the early morning line Wednesday didn't show any bump for Obama, despite Hillary's endorsement. Her husband, meanwhile, has virtually endorsed McCain. And he indicated he'd be leaving town following his speech Wednesday night.

But there's more to this Obama-Biden-bounce deficit than the Clinton cold shoulder. Another Gallup poll says 50% of Americans expect their taxes to be raised under Obama. And make no mistake about it: There are many doubts about the Illinois senator regarding his experience, his foreign policy, his economics and his prior political and spiritual relationships.

Despite some good moments Monday night, Michelle Obama didn't erase these doubts. In the end, only her husband can do it. And only Obama can unite the badly split Democrats at this late date.

Reagan united a split GOP in 1980. George W. Bush united the McCain, Forbes and cultural-conservative factions in 2000.

Goldwater couldn't do it in '64. Nor could Humphrey in '68, Ford in '76 or Carter in '80.

But Bill Clinton succeeded in '92, and now it's Obama's task in '08. That's his job. No one can do it for him.

While the stock market looked warily on the Democratic National Convention this week, a lead story in the Wall Street Journal offered a serious indictment of Obama's economic program.

Epic failure. In their rush to come forth with a unique - breath of fresh air candidate, the democrats overlooked even the most basic base of national political experience and cast aside the notion that an electable democrat should be at least somewhat centrist, they bring forth Barack Obama. More power to them, and thank you.

ANYONE who even knows the definition of "conservative" would run from Obama-Biden as if this ticket were radioactive.

There are a lot of worried RATS out there in the MSM.

You noticed that too? Even they know the militant can't win.

The American people do not want the Black Panthers in charge of Home land security or Farrakhan as the next SCOTUS.

Everything that has occurred in these polls the last two months can be explained if one accepts the notion that Hillary Clinton would have easily beaten McCain in November. And I do accept that notion. The backlash in play has gone to McCain. If the Messiah finds a way to somehow reverse all that, he’ll win. If not, he’ll lose and we will see Hillary back and bigger than ever in 2012.

FOX just had Dukakass on! It is really amazing what a bunch of jackasses these people are. Even Dukakass couldn't come up with an Obama accomplishment BUT he is firmly behind Obama fo president?????

I hope McCain is watching all of this and remembering the times that he crossed the aisle to work with the jackasses!!!!!!!

My two brothers, one a yellow dog dem who claims to be a prolife Catholic and the other an “Independent” who voted twice for GWB and was in the Naval Academy with McCain - are trading Obama-Ayers videos and columns back and forth tonight. I’m sitting this one out. LOL

Maybe off topic, but I never understood why the Edsel was such a loser in the marketplace. Sure I've done research on it and such, and from what I've garnered it was a pretty darn good car .. mechanically, styling, and otherwise, .. so then *why* was the Edsel such a bust in the market?

I'm serious on this, really want to know ..... any FReepers care to chime in?

Point of order: Clinton did not succeed in ‘92. He got an assist from Perot.

The panic in the eyes of the “reporters” on CNN and MSNBC is very amusing to watch.

Too ugly, too expensive, too wide, had an annoying whistle at highway speeds, and didn’t fit any niche in the FOMOCO lineup. I was a little kid when they came out, but I remember they were the butt of jokes from the day they appeared.

I hate to sh!t in the punchbowl, but I think it’s too early to tell. I do believe we can safely say his VP pick didn’t help him, though.
