Why Obama looks vulnerable
By Gideon Rachman
Published: August 25 2008
The Democratic party will whip up some euphoria in Denver this week. But a dark cloud of anxiety hovers over the party convention.
A horrible truth is beginning to dawn on the Democrats. Barack Obama is not the once in a generation political genius they thought they had discovered. On the contrary, he is a weak candidate for the presidency.
With a feeble economy, an unpopular war and the Republicans in disarray, the Democrats should win the presidential election in a canter. But Mr Obama, the Democratic nominee, is neck and neck with John McCain, his Republican rival. For sure, Mr Obama has some real assets intelligence, grace, good looks, star quality. But history suggests that he is a very risky candidate.
Since 1968, the Democrats have won just three out of 10 presidential races. Their two successful candidates Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were both white, centrist governors from the southern US. Whenever the Democrats nominated a liberal from outside the South George McGovern, Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, John Kerry they lost.
Mr Obama is a northerner. He is a liberal. He is a former college professor. And he is black. A bold choice, under the circumstances.

1) He is a Marxist
2) He was a lecturer, not a Professor, you dolts.
I don’t buy this “unpopular war” talking point. Americans just want to win...its hard for Obama without Affirmative Action getting him jobs.
Mr. Obama is also completely and totally unqualified for the presidency.
It’s like a milkman running for governor.
Made my day!
Te far Left wing, having commandeered the democrat party, has their candidate, as the establishment democrats were unable to nominate Hillary. They have to live with this now. Their only hope is full bore propaganda campaign by the MSM.
Funny how those imaginary situations don't help much in the real world.
The economy is, overall, just fine. The war is going very well indeed, and the great majority of Americans understand that. Republicans aren't in any greater disarray than usual, certainly not when compared with the current three-ring circus in Denver.
Pretending your daydreams are real is no way to run a party, folks.
O is not a bold choice. He is no choice at all. He has been foisted upon the party and the electorate by a nieve, left wing cabal enamored by their self proclaimed superiority. Obama is the quintessential childish snob. He has absolutely nothing to recommend him.
Michelle’s nomination speech suited someone seeking the Presidency of a local PTA. This team does not have a clue what they are doing.
“I dont buy this unpopular war talking point.”
Nor do I.
Yes, this “unpopular war” can’t even get a date for the Prom
A very inaccurate and ignorant way to characterize public support of war.
Still, you will see many, even here on FR, where people should know better, that accept this propaganda meme as fact.
Well said.
Please don’t take this the wrong way: “nieve” should be “naive”.
It’s unpopular AND Americans want to win, as long as they believe it is reasonably possible. The media and demo-rats certainly jumped to take advantage(to get us to loose) , but Bush clearly screwd up. The surge and the resignation of Rumsfield proved it. All along 2005-2006 Bush got on TV and told us were winning and we were not. We know that because we are NOW. There were many other things screwed up in that same period that gave the rats the advantage. This is the first I have seen decent political counter postering by republicans in a long time.
What’s that drip-drop? Drip...Michelle is proud of her country for the first time in her life. Drop...Obama thinks rural Americans are gun-clinging religious zealots. Drip...Obama is a citizen of the world. Drop....Obama thinks we have 57 states. Drip...Obama thinks China has superior infrastructure to America. Oh...it’s the drip-drop collapse of Obama in the polls.

This is something that really rubs me raw. In what rational civilized mind is war ever popular or even desirable? And it is one of GWB biggest failures is to communicate is the inherent distaste for any war. But in a world filled with truly evil and barbaric people who wish to kill all thing American we better be ready to fight if we are to survive. Unlike the libs who just want to smoke pot, put their head in the sand and pretend that everything is hunky dory. FDR use to say in all of his wartime speeches "I hate war!" and then implored the troops and the American people to press on.
Kerry was ahead in the polls 2004 BEFORE the Republican convention. Obama was popular because no one knew him allowing him to be the personal liberal human saviour that solves each person’s specific personal problem, even motivation. Democrats were dumb to think that would get him elected. The same quality that made him popular 3-4 months ago allows an opponent to fill in the blanks and paint his picture for the public. I call it the Colin Powell factor. He is always popular too with no positions.
Watching democrats suffer is a great pleasure but things are still very bad for conservatism, and will be until the public gets on to Reid and Pelosi . Speaking of which, check out Pelosi:

Except that the milkman has actually run a business and held a job in the private sector.
Yeah, but other than that, what could go wrong with him in the White House.
