BURBANK, California (Reuters) - John McCain, who often invokes his ordeal as a Vietnam war prisoner to show his devotion to his country as he runs for U.S. president, drew on the experience again on Monday -- this time to deflect sniping over the number of houses he owns.
McCain's Democratic rival Barack Obama last week accused the Republican senator of being out of touch with ordinary people after he was unable to say in an interview how many houses were owned by him and his wife Cindy, a wealthy heiress to a beer distributorship.
In an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, McCain, 71, said his priority was to keep Americans in their homes in tough economic times.
Then he recalled his Vietnam experience.
"I spent 5 1/2 years in a prison cell without -- I didn't have a house. I didn't have a kitchen table. I didn't have a table. I didn't have a chair," he said.
"I spent those 5 1/2 years ... not because I wanted to get a house when I got out."

Gotta love the al-Reuters objectivity: “McCain USES Vietnam ordeal”.
Why are the rats making so much trouble over wealth when they are the wealthiest on government?
I’ve never used the word ‘snarky’ before. Does it fit here?
The more I see and hear John and Cindy, the more I visualize them in the White House. Can’t wait to see them at our convention. Class.
Democrats are so damm shallow. Why aren't they bitchen n moaning about their celebrity pals' wealth?
Why aren't the maggots noticing that those celebrities do very little to help the poor from their personal wealth?
So, they need to clam up. What have John Kerry and Ted Kennedy done to help others from their personal stashes? NOTHING ... and that goes for the rest of the Democrat maggots too!!!
Duncan Hunter is a Vietnam veteran..Army
he would understand the dedication to duty...
His father was a decorated WWII veteran...Marines
His son is a Marine...Iraq 4 times...
All McCain needs to do is mention Rezko.
McCain did a good job on Leno last night. He was very likable even joked about his age. You’ll never catch obama joking about himself.
[McCain said he was proud of the way his wife’s father had built up a large business after fighting in World War Two.]
Kazam!!
Its ENVY.
Th original idea was to mock his not knowing how many homes he has..
It quickly however turned into a way to get on McCains nerves due to a comment he made once that the clanging of keys reminds him of his time as a POW.
How exactly did Barack and Michelle make their fortune? How much money was he paid as a “community activist?” I’d like to know how these people make a living from a job like that. I’m guessing that being a state senator was not even a full time job. Was he practicing law then too? So he’s no pauper his own self.
Point #1 Cindy McCain has a reported net worth of over $100,000,000. The Clintons have made more than that just since they left office. They have homes in New York and Washington.
Point #2 Everyone seems to have forgotten the Kerry/Heinz parade of homes during the last election cycle. http://www.snopes.com/politics/kerry/homes.asp
Point #3 There are tons of rich Democrats who travel the world in their Gulfstream Jets, and visit the posh spots of the world. Many of them own homes all over the world. The democrats love money, and are always eager to take as much of our money as possible.
The Democrats were jingling keys the other day to torment McCain...
(jailor’s keys...)
How sick does it get...
He had to answer them...
But they opened the door wide.........
And there is much to admire in the man...
He was there when his country called and did not shirk his duty...
His loyalty to America has been well proven...
I have confidence that he will be that same man of integrity and patriotism as he leads our nation as POTUS and Commander-in-Chief...
Kickbacks.
Republicans...wealth...greed....Sheriff of Nottingham
Democrats...wealth...benevolence...Robin Hood
:)
He was a “legal aid” type so he got paid by the city or state...
So?
