WHERE IT STRUCK: The 5.9 quake was felt in Hawke's Bay and the surrounding region, New Zealand, 26 August 2008.

QUAKE ACTIVITY: The seismicity map shows the current earthquake (indicated by a star) in the context of ten years of 'deep' (greater than 40 km) seismicity (indicated by coloured points). The inset shows a depth cross section of the seismicity and current earthquake, projected onto the plane W-E.

Lol, I don't work for Reuters and didn't write the article for them. Reuters also said that the earthquake's magnitude was 6.6, and of course as I posted above, it was only 5.8 magnitude. However, the initial reading might have been 6.6. As in the case of most earthquakes, there is usually an adjustment of the magnitude.
As far as the tsunami warning reported in the Reuters article, it's pretty much standard procedure to issue a tsunami advisory and in some cases, a warning on the chance that there will be one. The reporting agencies then couldn't be accused of failing to inform.
The December 26, 2004 9.0 Sumatra Earthquake had a initial depth reading of 24.9 miles. The combination of the magnitude 9.0 quake occurring in a subduction fault zone created that devastating killer tsunami.
That's interesting, BIGLOOK.
Thanks M. Espinola. You're right, that's a very active earthquake zone.

BIGLOOK, because earth's meridians are hypothetical imaginary lines, I have been waiting to hear something about your doubting the accuracy of epicenter locations or perhaps that you thought that USGS would make the generalization that the earthquake occurred exactly on a meridian, etc.
Wasn’t it just last week China had another earthquake, farther inland?
Glad you’re outta there ping!
I have also noted that each one crosses a parallel :)
