Police Investigate Possible Plot To Kill Obama

Law enforcement authorities have arrested two men in connection with a possible assassination plot against Sen. Barack Obama at the Democratic Convention in Denver, CBS station KCNC-TV reported Monday.

Police in Aurora, Colo. made a routine traffic stop at 2:38 a.m. Sunday, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office. Two rifles were found in the car, along with methamphetamine. Another law enforcement source says he was told at least one of the rifles was a "sniper rifle."

A second source told CBS station KCNC-TV reporter Brian Maass that authorities told officers they are concerned they may have come upon a possible "assassination plot."

That arrest then led authorities to a second man staying at the Cherry Creek Hotel in Glendale, Colo. When authorities knocked on the man's door, they say he jumped out of his sixth floor window, landing on an awning and running from the scene. They say they soon found him with a broken ankle. He too was arrested.

Its unclear precisely why authorities suspect the men were targeting Barack Obama, but one of the officer's who was briefed says he was told at least one of the suspects made statements to that effect.

The Secret Service, ATF and the FBI are all involved in the investigation. A Secret Service spokesman says the agency is concerned by the proximity to the Democratic National Convention and the items found in the man's car.

And, of course, no matter what the “sniper rifle” turns out to actually be.......it will never be corrected in the reporting by the media. It will remain a “sniper rifle”, forever more.

The first question that jumped into my mind was: how does a routine traffic stop translate into a discovery of meth and rifles, unless the meth and rifles were setting out for the world to see? The article does not say. If the rifles (and the meth) were in plain sight, that would seem to indicate that the owner did not have some big assassination plot going, or else he might have kept things in the trunk. If the meth was hidden, why would the officers want to search the vehicle as part of a "routine" traffic stop?

I guess the crux of my concern here is that any stop referred to as "routine" should not end with a searched vehicle without a damn good cause. So what was the cause?

The story isn’t clear whether law enforcement or the two men were carrying methamphetamine.
