A black delegate for Hillary Rodham Clinton says she was called an “Uncle Tom” by Illinois Senate President Emil Jones, 1 of Barack Obama’s political mentors.
Chicago political consultant Delmarie Cobb says Jones made the remarks Saturday night while discussing her support for Clinton. She called the remark “fighting words” and unacceptable.
Time for a fundraiser.

Barack Obama supporter Oprah Winfrey will be there when he accepts the nomination later this month in Denver, Colo., a Harpo rep confirmed this afternoon.
Oprah pal Gayle King told Entertainment Tonight that Winfrey will be there during Obama’s acceptance, however, there are no plans for her to take the stage at the acceptance speech.
To find out who is speaking at the convention and for the latest updates, visit Sun-Times Washington Bureau Chief Lynn Sweet’s blog for details.
A representative from Harpo said earlier reports about Winfrey renting a $50,000 house during the week of the Democratic National Convention in Denver are “untrue.”
“Oprah has not been asked to introduce him, is not expecting to be asked to introduce him and I would doubt that she would want to introduce him. She thinks this is HIS moment. I know that she is planning to be there,” she told ET.
King will broadcast her Oprah and Friends XM Radio show from the convention starting Aug. 25.

Does Oprah need a makeover?
The Kansas City Star
When local TV ratings were released for the month of July rarely a newsmaking event in this or any other city one set of numbers practically leaped off the page.
The Oprah Winfrey Show finished fourth in its time slot.
*snip*
But Winfreys reign as a ratings powerhouse is over. The show has been drifting back to Earth, losing 7 percent of its audience nationwide this year alone. O the Magazine saw a double-digit decline in circulation. Authors can no longer count on the Oprah effect.
And her endorsement of Barack Obama may have turned off, literally, viewers who supported Hillary Clinton.
When asked about this in May, the head of Harpo, her production company, denied that Obama had hurt the Queen of Talk.

CHICAGO (CBS) ― He hides from reporters, ignores phone calls and won't explain why he's running. Sources tell CBS 2, though, that Thursday evening he'll effectively win a seat in the State Senate.
In "Truth in Politics," Political Editor Mike Flannery takes a look at a strange campaigneven by Chicago standards.
CBS 2 waited for five hours outside Emil Jones III's office at the Thompson Center.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich pays the 30-year-old high school graduate $59,400 a year to do "community outreach." But Jones is suddenly in line for a big pay raise.
His father, State Senate President Emil Jones, Jr., is retiring and is greasing the skids for his son to move up.
Emil Jones III inches closer to dad's Senate seat
August 21, 2008
Emil Jones III moved a step closer this afternoon to taking over his fathers state Senate seat.
Democratic Party leaders in the South Side and south suburban 14th Senate District unanimously chose Jones over community activist Dozier Thomas to replace Emil Jones Jr. on the Nov. 4 ballot during a brief meeting at the 34th Ward Regular Democratic Organization office, 507 W. 111th Street.
At the meeting, the elder Jones defended his decision to anoint his 30-year-old son and asserted he would remain active in politics. Thomas, his sons opponent for the ballot spot, was nominated by state Rep. Monique Davis (D-Chicago), who has had frosty relations with the Senate president despite being one of his constituents.
Just because youre in public office does not mean youre a second-class citizen, Jones said in remarks broadcast on WLS-Channel 7. And I respect fathers who take care of their children. So would I support my son? Sure Im going to support my son.
Emil Jones III, a $60,000-a-year employee in Gov. Blagojevichs Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, said before winning the right to replace his father on the ballot that he was active in community organizations and that economic development is my strongest point.
Because the district is so heavily Democratic, Jones IIIs victory against perennial GOP candidate Ray Wardingly on Nov. 4 is almost assured.
Illinois Senate President Emil Jones (left) recently announced his retirement and is supporting his son to take over his Senate seat. In 2003, Jones smiles after being sworn in as Illinois Senate President while his son Emil Jones III (inset) looks on.

Nausea is an understatement. I have never seen anything like the politics in this state .... corruption at every level of statewide government.
Ironic perhaps that the State that gave us Lincoln also gave us the Daley machine.
Ol’ Emil has nothing up on all the rest of the crooks that rig elections and rape the public coffers.
More like O'Brien in Room 101.
