A Wyoming hunter who accidentally caused a security concern at the Grand Hyatt hotel Saturday said hes sorry for the problems he caused and didnt know the Democratic National Convention was in town.
When Joseph Calanchini walked into the Grand Hyatt hotel with 2 rifles and 2 pistols Saturday around 4:00 pm, Denver Police evacuated House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from the hotel until they arrested Calanchini and made sure it was safe for Pelosi to return.
I didnt even know the DNC was in town. I dont watch the news, said Joseph Calanchini from the Denver City Jail where hes being held on bond. If I had known, I would have done things differently. It was a simple mistake.
Calanchini, who talked to 9Wants to Know from the Denver City Jail, says he had the weapons because hes getting ready to go on a hunting safari trip in Limpopo Basin, South Africa on August 28. He planned to hunt warthog, impala, baboon and jackals with a friend there.
He says he had just picked up his rifles from the Sportsmans Warehouse and had them in a locked gun case when he checked in at the Grand Hyatt. The clerk checking him in noticed the rifle case and called security.
Im amazed. Its not like they were illegal weapons, they were all registered to me, said Calanchini. It was bad timing.
Police say Calanchini had permits for the rifles, but did not have concealed permits to carry two pistols that were found in his luggage. Calanchini says he forgot they were in there.
He was charged with unlawfully carry weapons, a misdemeanor. Calanchini is being held on $10,000
Here in CA, transport or carrying handguns in a piece of luggage would be concealed, but legal if the luggage had a lock.
The Denver SWAT would have just taken him out if he had carried them into her highnesses hotel unconcealed. Imagine the panic if all the liberals had seen an actual gun! Oh the horror!
That pdf is *way* out of date. I don't know where you got it, but Colorado has honored a large number of other states permits for several years. I suspect the pdf is at least from 2004, if not before.
“...but at least one is within 2 or 3 steps of me at all times!”

To be sure there are 3 of those.
The rest of them?
Who really knows?
Better to keep it that way...
in the event one day of confiscation.
Think about it.
He was in the US Marines 1999-2004 as a jet engine mechanic.
Registered? Why? It's not required in Arizona, don't see why it would be in Colorado. Registration is what the rats want so they know who has the guns when they finally think they can start confiscation.
Interesting...
The first reports have the hotel saying he was not a guest there (manager quote) and had no reason to be in the (SanFranNan’s) hotel...
Now we find this all ocurred while he was checking in!
Did someone’s PR department screw up...:^)
I’ll bet you can’t wait until you end up with alzheimer’s.
Every day will be like X-Mas, finding stuff you didn’t remember you had, meeting new people every day, etc.
It just goes to show, there’s always a silver lining. /s
“He planned to hunt WARTHOG, impala, baboon and JACKALS with a friend there.”
Maybe he planned on being in Denver, afterall.
I posted the myspace link on another thread, but when you put something on myspace, it is there for the whole world. It is just part of due diligence to post it here as well.
Exactly. He is "just passing through" Denver, i.e. a traveler from one jurisdiction to another. He should be protected by federal law if his luggage is locked and the firearms are in a locked container. Denver is perverting the meaning of "concealed carry" anyway by extending it to cover a pistol in a suitcase.
Heck, he doesn't have to go to Africa - there's a bunch of those animals marching in the Denver streets right now!!!
Most firearms laws are prempted by the state, but there are exceptions for Denver...but even Denver recognizes reciprocal permits. Mainly open carry & "assault weapons" come under local jurisdiction.
Colorado allows loaded handguns in vehicles; in places unloaded is specified, it doesn't apply to the magazine, but just no chambered round. Rifles & shotgus are an excpetion to that.
Are you going to explain what misdemeanor he violated?
I wasn’t there, and I am not involved in this case. If I am allowed to take the article at face value, then Calanchini “did not have concealed permits to carry two pistols that were found in his luggage.”
The government should fear the people. It’s fun to see them squirm from time to time like the worms that they are.
What is wrong with this guy? Does he not realize his place in the “new order”? Who does he think he is...an American citizen whose rights are protected by a Constitution? Doesn’t he know that document is ever growing and changing to meet the needs and desires of the Democratic Party? Some people never learn!! /sarc
You just may be right. ;)
