Anti-gun hysterics have a new spokesman: Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. I had barely finished writing about anxiety disorders over guns, and "His Honor" opens his mouth and makes my case.
Mayor Daley was reacting to the Supreme Court decision striking down the D.C. gun ban, and the likelihood that a similar challenge will soon come against the Chicago ban. Now, some of his rhetoric is the same tired old stuff we've heard before; he called the high court's ruling a "frightening decision" and predicted a "return to the days of the Wild West."
The Mayor should be so lucky - in the days of the so-called "Wild West" the most violent cities of that time never came close to the levels of carnage experienced in present day Chicago, which competes each year for the title of "most violent city in America" - and often wins. Less than 600 homicides in Chicago is considered a good year!
But just look at some of his more disturbing comments:
"What I'm saying is you have to look at the first- responders and how it's gonna jeopardize their lives ..."
So, the good Mayor is suggesting that ordinary people who own guns are a threat to police and firemen? Well, yes he is. In what is nothing short of an insult to every decent citizen of Chicago, he proclaimed:
"You have to look at a new ordinance in order to protect firemen and policemen going to the scenes of people who have armed themselves in their home..."
Then, expressing the elitist arrogance that invariably accompanies the "arguments" of the anti-gun contingency, the Mayor pronounced:
"[I'm not just going to say] Oh, because the Supreme Court [overturned Washington's handgun ban], we're just gonna dismiss it and, all the sudden, people can arm themselves."
Well, we certainly can't let "the People" arm themselves, now can we? In Chicago, you see, they only want the drug-dealers and gang-bangers to have guns:
As a reporter recently noted: "... in Chicago, gunfire is a routine feature of the city's dominant criminal dynamic, [because of] a deeply-entrenched, multi-generational gang system with, authorities estimate, close to 70,000 members citywide."
Nor have any of the Mayor's drastic measures been even remotely effective:
"The regular citizen in Chicago cannot go anywhere and buy firearms," says Williams, eyebrows raised. "And yet, in one year, in the 1990s, we had more than 19,000 weapons recovered. In one year. We've been averaging 10,000 weapons recovered every year for the last 10 or 12 or 14 years. And that's with a ban." http://www.thestar.com/News/World/article/418838
Now, his misguided views on controlling crime are bad enough, but when the Mayor starts dissecting the minutia of guns and gun ownership, he sounds disturbingly like a classic obsessive-compulsive, trying desperately to control every tiny aspect of his life. Take this nervous diatribe, for example:
"What does a policeman do when there's a domestic battery [call] and they're both armed? Do they enter the home or apartment or do they wait outside? ... How 'bout the neighbors? How 'bout the postman -- all the other issues that go with people coming into your home or close to your home? ... Whose responsibility is it when your son takes the gun outside and police come by? ... It's just not allowing people to arm themselves. How many guns do you have -- 50, 60? Can they have a .357 Magnum? Can they have ammunition that will go through a wall?"
Talk about paranoia. Mayor Daley, like most liberals, fears the ordinary citizen with a legal gun more than the criminal with an illegal gun. Such hysteria is bad enough from the gun-phobic activists - when uttered by the Mayor of one of America's largest cities, it's downright scary
Every day, in cities and towns across the nation, people go about their daily lives, carrying handguns for protection. Sitting in restaurants, walking down city streets, shopping in malls - all without incident. I'm one of them. Since I now live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, I carry a .45 caliber pistol with me nearly all of the time.
Oh, by the way, I count among my friends a large number of police officers - and contrary to public mis-perception, real street cops have no problem with legal permit holders. And this is the case in 95% of the country - only Illinois and Wisconsin still prohibit citizens from carrying firearms for self-defense.
Thus when I visit my son in Chicago, my former home town, I am immediately stripped of my ability to defend myself. Not only am I precluded by law from carrying a handgun; I can't even have one UNLOADED in my car.
One has to wonder how long the safety of Chicago's citizens will continue to be sacrificed in order to appease a small group of mentally disturbed individuals. But when the highest official in the city is one of them, it doesn't appear that reason will triumph any time soon.
Is the Pope Catholic?
I do notice EVERYTHING in Chicago has his name on it.
YUP! Gun control works! Just ask a violent criminal!
Chicago — another vomitous Blue City. All we have to do is wait long enough and the criminals will kill all the disarmed Dem voters...
Me, I fear some of the citizens of Chicago...like this pair of Obama supporters
“The Mayor should be so lucky - in the days of the so-called “Wild West” the most violent cities of that time never came close to the levels of carnage experienced in present day Chicago, which competes each year for the title of “most violent city in America” - and often wins. Less than 600 homicides in Chicago is considered a good year!”
Deserves repeating, though those studies, as I recall, did omit dueling and self defense from their numbers (in the Wild Western mining towns).

Does Mentally Ill = Corrupt? Then the answer is YES!
In 1876 in Deadwood there were only four killings, and one of those murdered was Wild Bill Hickok.
But Deadwood was less corrupt. And the town only had a few MOBS to deal with. What little govt. they had was not yet entrenched.
Liberals are mentally deficient.
Daly is a liberal.
Daly is ....
Yep, sounds like Mayor Daley just doesn’t look at things the way others of us do.
Well, your honor, gangs such as the Vice Lords, Cobras, Gangster Disciples, and Latin Kings have made vast areas of your city a war zone. They all violate your gun laws with impunity. Do you really think the sky will now fall because of a Supreme Court ruling that might curb your gun laws that don’t work in the first place?
I wonder if Daley, like other big city mayors, travels with a security detail everywhere he goes.
Remember how Rosie O’Donnell used to shoot off her mouth about gun control, and then we found out she has armed security guards traveling with her? It’s easy to be liberal, and urge the rest of us to be liberal on these issues, when you don’t fear for your own security.
That being said, aside from an inauspiscious start of the assumption, one must step back and re-address the more salient issue, to wit, does in fact, the mayor actually posess a brain stem and the aforementioned brain to begin with?
Now we have come to the crux of the situation. Clearly his actions are that of an unthinking plant, being without thought and totally reactionary in the knee-jerk sense of the term. We must therefor conclude that, no in fact the mayor is not mentally disturbed, as one must have the proper organs to be thus, and the mayor has yet to operate in a fashion which indicates he has.
