Gallup: Biden Does No Harm, but May Not Help Much

Barack Obama's selection of U.S. Sen. and former presidential candidate Joe Biden as his running mate is not generating a momentous immediate reaction from the nation's voters. Just 14% of registered voters interviewed in a new USA Today/Gallup poll say Biden makes them more likely to vote for Obama in November and 7% say less likely while 72% say he will not have much effect on their vote. This results in Biden potentially having a net positive impact on voter support for the Democratic ticket of +7 percentage points -- small by comparison with other recent vice presidential selections. A net 17% of nationwide registered voters said they were more likely to vote for John Kerry in 2004 on the basis of his selection of John Edwards as his running mate (24% more likely and 7% less likely). A net 12% of voters reported being more likely to vote for Al Gore in 2000 on account of his choosing Joe Lieberman (16% more likely and 4% less likely). A net 18% of voters indicated they were more likely to vote for Bob Dole in 1996 on the basis of his choice of Jack Kemp to complete the ticket (26% more likely and 8% less likely). A net 25% of voters were more likely to vote for Bill Clinton in 1992 on account of Al Gore (33% more likely and 8% less likely). The only recent vice presidential choices to spark less voter reaction than Biden were Dick Cheney in 2000 (net 4%, with 14% more likely and 10% less likely) and Dan Quayle in 1988 (net score of 0, with 10% more likely and 10% less likely).

I saw where an earlier poll revealed that he would hurt the ticket.

No harm yet. I say remove the bridle and let him run.

I watched Biden yesterday on the news, and he was just spraying the same old liberal crap all over anyone who would watch -— the same old tired, fraudulent liberal play book crap. Obama, the lightweight he is, needed a mouthpiece and he got one. And that is all Biden is. Another generic, textbook lib.

Give Biden the microphone for the next few months.

This is real nightmare stuff: If Obambi is elected and, God forbid, anything happened to him, we’d have Biden as president. And, God forbid, if anything happened to Biden, we’d have that utter moron Pelosi. Horrible.

Biden is the one most single reason that we have ultra-liberals on the Federal Courts.

He is an extreme liberal.

Certainly will if we start looking into some things. Like, if Biden makes less than $200K/yr (I’m guessing), and pays $250/roundtrip (AMTRAK site’s Acela fare) to commute home every night (don’t we all), say 4 times week for say 40 weeks per year, where does that $40,000 come from? And so what, he commutes home? On that train it’s about 1-1.5 hours, about the same amount of time it took me to drive 35 miles home when I worked in DC and lived in MD. I’d love to see how much he pushed AMTRAK subsidies — each daily r/t probably cost us $500-750 in real terms to the taxpayer.

He’s ranked as the third most liberal Senator, and he’s been repeating the liberal playbook for over three decades. That’s exactly what he is expected to do.

Joe Biden isn’t one to remain in the back seat for very long. This will be interesting.

Biden will play attack dog from now until the election so Obooma won’t have to get down into the mud. Biden will start to look like a taller Howard Dean as time goes on.

My guess is that the taxpayers and/or his campaign pay for his commuting expenses.

The only thing I like about Biden is that he is a Catholic.

I'm a believer that a VP choice can't help you much but they can hurt you. While it's fun to stir the pot and poke fun at “plugs” I really don't think Biden is going to make much difference one way or another.

In the end voters for or against the guy at the top of the ticket.

Your poll must have been with people that knew him. :)
