ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The U.S. Naval Academy is building on efforts to increase student diversity with the help of a new commercial and a graphic novel.

...

Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler, the academy's superintendent, wants to make the academy's student body as diverse as the Navy's enlisted force, in which minorities make up about 47 percent.

The Naval Academy needs to maintain its standards, academic and otherwise, regardless of "diversity".

According to http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/documents/2008_PlebeProfile_ClassOf2012_0725.pdf for the latest class there were 2196 candidates who "qualified scholastically, medically, and in physical aptitude", out of which 1537 were admitted. So academic standards do not need to be lowered to get enough qualified applicants. I want smart people in charge of nuclear submarines.

The military has done a great job of integrating all people in the service. If they can do the same for the service academies and maintain their standards without invoking affirmative action principles, I am all for it. Just don’t play favorites on the basis of gender, race, religion, etc.

What ever happened to best qualified?
What ever happened to “earned his or her way here” ?
Do we really want a “diversity hire” being in charge somewhere down the road during a war time action?
This is the MILITARY not the Government Bureaucracy, were any idiot is qualified.

We don’t need any affirmative action admirals. Wasn’t one of them just fired for incompetence?

This is none of VADM Fowler's business. Time for him to be retired, today!

This quest for diversity for its own sake is literal insanity, and its proponents are insane.

Fowler is wrong. I would never want my name associated with lowering the standards at such a great school.
How long does Fowler he have left in his tour at “The Academy”, one more year before he moves on? I find it hard to understand how he could wish to lower the entrance level.

On the plus side, he did a couple of good things. He saw that every Mid. got sea time and the USNA got a great new fleet of “new” Navy 44’s. The old ones were still usable but not in great shape after MANY years of service.

Many people see the letters USNA and just figure it's just another military university. In fact, it is one of the finest universities in the country and its’ math and science departments rival the best there is!

“In addition to earning a bachelor of science Degree in Mechanical Engineering with distinction from the Naval Academy, Vice Adm. Fowler’s education includes master’s degrees in Business Administration from Chaminade University of Honolulu and in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He is also a graduate of the Syracuse University National Security Studies program and was a military fellow on the Council on Foreign Relations, where he is now a lifetime member.”
Harvard and the Council on Foreign Relations are a couple of good places to become indoctrinated.

I would think you would want the best people you can find, in a service where the facts of life are that, if the CO screws up, his entire command may die
