George Washington Inspired by God, Researcher Says

Despite being born nearly 100 years before the restoration of the gospel, George Washington was inspired by God throughout his life, including during the Revolutionary War, according to a physician-presenter during Wednesday's session of Education Week.

Robert Young, a dermatologist and president of Rocky Mountain Dermatology, said Washington was a necessary step to the Lord being able to restore the gospel in this dispensation.

"All of us have a place in God's kingdom," Young said. "There is a reason you are on the earth today. And I believe the same thing about George Washington.

"There was no other nation on the earth where the Lord could have restored the gospel. And George Washington could not have been replaced."

From personal facts and joking comments about Washington's lifelong battle with gum disease to his preference for the simple life on his farm at Mount Vernon, Young presented a look into the life of the first president of the United States from his lifelong research and love for the man.

"The more you study the life of George Washington, the more you will come to love this man," Young said. "It's similar to the way you can come to love Joseph Smith by studying about his life."

Washington was a wealthy man, but he didn't start out that way. In fact, it wasn't until he married his wife that he became one of the wealthiest men in the Virginia colony. Some historians have speculated that the marriage was strictly out of convenience; Young disagrees.

"Whether he loved his wife as soon as they were married may be arguable," he said. "But he grew to love his wife deeper than any love I have ever known. And she adored him. She was clearly his best friend."

Part of that love was manifest in Washington's care for his stepchildren. After a bout with smallpox in his youth, some historians believe Washington was left sterile for the remainder of his life.

The dermatologist and deep researcher of Washington also defended the man's religious beliefs. Many believe Washington to have been strictly dispassionate towards religion and spiritual matters. But numerous journal entries stating times when Washington knelt in prayer and received various personal revelations argue to the contrary.

"I am convinced that George Washington spent much of his life on his knees," Young said. "He was not a Deist! He may or may not have been skeptical about Christianity, but he believed very strongly in God."

Washington's belief in God, and a series of supposed miracles should also lend Latter-day Saints to acquire a deeper understanding of this man, Young inferred.

"He made serious blunders that could have ended the American Revolution in the first week," he said. "But God provided the mightiest storm ever seen and Washington's army was able to flee at the battle of New York."

Making the topic of the lecture personal, Young also stressed the power that God holds over our individual lives.

"Being on your knees means being close to your Heavenly Father and keeping your eyes on the prize," Young said. "The Lord will no more desert you than he did George Washington at Valley Forge."

It was those great men in history who came to the Prophet in his dream scolding why they the work was not done for them in the House of the Lord.

That is why they have been baptized!

Those who say that in this country one's religion should be relegated to his private life alone and never be allowed to "intrude" on his public activities should study the Founding Fathers. This nation has a spiritual foundation. Its wellsprings are themselves religious. Its life is deeply rooted in faith.

When I [Ezra Taft Benson]became President of the Twelve and Spencer W. Kimball became President of the Church, we met, just the two of us, every week after our Thursday meetings in the temple, just to be sure that things were properly coordinated between the Twelve and the First Presidency. After one of those first meetings, we talked about the many sacred documents in some of the older temples. St. George was mentioned in particular because St. George is our oldest temple in Utah. I had a stake conference down there about that time, and it was agreed that I would go into the archives -- the walk-in vault -- of that great temple and review the sacred documents that were there. We were planning for the remodeling and renovating of the St. George Temple and thought that the records might possibly be moved to Salt Lake for safekeeping. And there in the St. George Temple I saw what I had always hoped and prayed that someday I would see. Ever since I returned as a humble missionary and first learned that the Founding Fathers had appeared in that temple, I wanted to see the record. And I saw the record. They did appear to Wilford Woodruff twice and asked why the work hadn't been done for them. They had founded this country and the Constitution of this land, and they had been true to those principles. Later the work was done for them.

In the archives of the temple, I saw in a book, in bold handwriting, the names of the Founding Fathers and others, including Columbus and other great Americans, for whom the work had been done in the house of the Lord. This is all one great program on both sides of the veil. We are fortunate to be engaged in it on this side of the veil. I think the Lord expects us to take an active part in preserving the Constitution and our freedom.

The Founding Fathers of this nation, those great men, appeared within those sacred walls of the St. George Temple and had their vicarious work done for them. President Wilford Woodruff spoke of it in these words: "Before I left St. George, the spirits of the dead gathered around me, wanting to know why we did not redeem them. Said they, `You have had the use of the Endowment House for a number of years, and yet nothing has ever been done for us. We laid the foundation of the government you now enjoy, and we never apostatized from it, but we remained true to it and were faithful to God.'"

After he became President of the Church, President Wilford Woodruff declared that "those men who laid the foundation of this American government were the best spirits the God of heaven could find on the face of the earth. They were choice spirits [and] were inspired of the Lord."

The temple work for the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence and other Founding Fathers has been done. All these appeared to Wilford Woodruff when he was president of the St. George Temple. President George Washington was ordained a high priest at that time. You will also be interested to know that, according to Wilford Woodruff's journal, John Wesley, Benjamin Franklin, and Christopher Columbus were also ordained high priests at that time. When one casts doubt about the character of these noble sons of God, I believe he or she will have to answer to the God of heaven for it. Yes, with Lincoln I say: "To add brightness to the sun or glory to the name of Washington is . . . impossible. Let none attempt it. In solemn awe pronounce the name and in its deathless splendor, leave it shining on."

you know i could see where those great men and women who died or gave everything to give us this nation might have wanted to come back and “scold” Joseph Smith and slap him up the side of his head...

After all he attempted to make a national religion...

and he wanted to “convert people to mortmonism by the sword as Mohammad did ...

and his followers murdered people for not being mormons and denied them their religious rights...

jefferson and the others were conserned with the civil rights and the Bill of rights ...

Joseph Smith and his cronies violated the religious rights of not only the living but also the “great men in history” themselves...

mormon baptism for the dead is a violation of the rights given to us in the 1st Amendment...

forcing a different religion on someone is against everything Washington fought for at Valley forge..

George Washington must have been extremely angry when that was done to him...

No wonder he haunted Joseph Smith...

the spirits of Presbyterians past must have camped on his door step...
