Independents, women and Wayne County voters helped boost Democrat Barack Obama to a 7-point lead over Republican John McCain in the presidential race in Michigan, according to a Detroit Free Press-Local 4 Michigan Poll conducted this week. Obama's 46% to 39% statewide advantage is especially aided by a 39-point bulge among voters in Wayne County, including Detroit. Elsewhere in metro Detroit and outstate, Sens. McCain and Obama are virtually tied, according to the poll of 600 likely voters. Twelve percent are undecided and 3% support third-party candidates. Obama has significantly more support among voters younger than 35 and an 11-point lead among women statewide. Among men, the two candidates are virtually tied. Several other recent polls had shown the race tightening in Michigan, which is among a half dozen or so battleground states expected to decide the presidential race. The state has 17 electoral votes.

McCain can't break 45% nation wide despite Obama's slipping numbers. He should not be tempted to choose conventional VP such as Romney/Pawlenty to anticipate a win.

Choose Sarah Palin, please

I don’t think he would win MI if he picked Steve Yzerman as his running mate. MI just might be another “lost cause” kind of state, a la NY and CA.

My impression is that liberal and progressive supporters of Marxist Obama are more afraid of Mitt as McCain's veep, than of any other potential veep candidate.

I can't back this up. It's just an impression I get from talking to many liberals.

This was a Detroit Free Press-Local 4 Michigan Poll. Over the years, I have noticed that polls commissioned/conducted by local entities tend to be less accurate than polls conducted by the big nationally known pollsters. They also tend to fluctuate wildly.

I don't think McCain is going to carry Michigan...but I would not take this poll too seriously.

Maccaca's tagline could be "whistling past the graveyard."

He is fumbling around for reasons John McCain isn't going to win. Do I smell a troll?

Exactly, in our minds the most obvious choice stands between Romney and Pawlenty.

wrong. This poll was conducted by that renowed Iowa pollster(can’t recall her name) who nailed Iowa caucuses and MI primaries.

I’m afraid that Mccain will go with the coventional VP candidate which will sure doom his opportunity in Nov.

Choose Sarah Palin, please...

This was actually done by an independent pollster. She had the most accurate polls in the primaries, and is ranked #1 on 538.com. She uses a different model than other pollsters that predicts increased dem turnout, and sadly she was correct in most cases.

Hopefully the McCain campaign will write off MI, and as a result, write of Mittens as VP and pick someone who can actually help.

And why should we care about Michigan. Michigan has not voted Rep since 1988(Bush v Dukakis).

We need FA, NC, VA, OH.

Perhaps most striking is Obama's 17-point edge among independent voters -- a bloc McCain has cultivated since he first ran for president in 2000.

Sounds very suspicious to me.

Not sure about maccaca status. But I like his choice for VP, however she might be better on the ticket in 2012.

The more northern you go, the more left-leaning the independents are. That is to say that new england independents are really democrats, and that counts for some midwestern states like MN, WI, and MI.

I really don’t pay much attention to polls, but this particular pollster is usually spot on.

I’m curious, do you think McCain will gain significant puma (which I’m assuming you are, given your tagline and posting history) votes in the election if, and only if, he picks a female VP?
