Openly gay political commentator Rachel Maddow, 35, is getting her own prime-time show on MSNBC, the cable news channel confirmed on Tuesday.
"This just completes our prime-time lineup," MSNBC President Phil Griffin told the New York Times.
Beginning Sept. 8, Maddow will replace commentator Dan Abrams in the 9 p.m. time slot. Her show will initially focus on the presidential race but will become more of a general news program after the election.
"This is great," Maddow told the Times. "Getting a regular cable show is something Ive wanted."
Maddow will be the first out lesbian to host a prime-time news or political commentary show on American television, and one of the very few women ever to do so. MSNBC does not have any other news or political commentary shows hosted by women.
Maddow currently divides her time between Manhattan and western Massachusetts, where she lives with her partner of 10 years, artist Susan Mikula.
Maddow has hosted a popular liberal talk radio show on Air America since 2004. She has also been a frequent guest commentator on political talk shows like MSNBC's Tucker and CNN's Paula Zahn Now, and is currently a regular panelist on MSNBC's Race for the White House With David Gregory.

Snorrrrt. That made my day. Separated at birth.
She calls herself a “butch dyke” (her words). Yet I’ve seen her on TV wearing makeup and lipstick. Is that just her TV mask or what?
I was trying to understand the phrase “popular liberal talk show.” Is there such a thing? How do you measure popular in liberal terms?
The usual liberal way. It is popular among them to call for government funding of liberal talk shows. And if the government funds it, it MUST be popular. I mean, look at PBS and public radio - their audience must be in the hundreds.
Has Birkenstock signed up as an official advertiser?
The thing is, if she tried to look like a normal woman, she wouldn’t look half bad.
It is hilarious. Worth a peek just for the winner Bruce Jenner.
As I explained to a lesbian friend, over some beers one night: Women that are attracted to other women is not a mystery to me. Being a man, I ~get it~ with regard to understanding why women are attractive. No problem there.
Especially when you're talking about so-called “lipstick lesbians” who are attracted to feminine women. Got that.
That said, I don't understand why men are attractive to women in the first place or ~anyone~ least of all other men. But that's something for another day.
But least understandable is that for women who are attracted to other women... why is it that they almost without fail will inevitably fall into a masculine and feminine role? Clearly, it's not masculinity that's the problem. So is it the parts? No... they get strap-on parts.
So they want a masculine woman with strap-on parts to really trip their trigger. OK... now we're talking about really just a superficial difference between preferring that over a real masculine man with real parts.
So is it really a preference? OR is it a psychosis?
no word of a lie I took my dog to the groomers and this guy well young boy walked in and told me that they were the new groomer
I picked my dog up later and a woman was there, I asked who did the groom as my dog looked awful plus not himself
the woman told me that the groomer was a woman
I nearly fainted
last time I took my dog there for a groom, no chance
as for them wanting to look masculin , well it just shows how confused mentally they are
because this proves just how mentally confused these people are and they need help.
exactly
woman meets 2nd woman who looks like a boy or man , now 2nd woman wears strap on playing role of man

and they say they are normal, aye right
