Openly gay political commentator Rachel Maddow, 35, is getting her own prime-time show on MSNBC, the cable news channel confirmed on Tuesday.
"This just completes our prime-time lineup," MSNBC President Phil Griffin told the New York Times.
Beginning Sept. 8, Maddow will replace commentator Dan Abrams in the 9 p.m. time slot. Her show will initially focus on the presidential race but will become more of a general news program after the election.
"This is great," Maddow told the Times. "Getting a regular cable show is something Ive wanted."
Maddow will be the first out lesbian to host a prime-time news or political commentary show on American television, and one of the very few women ever to do so. MSNBC does not have any other news or political commentary shows hosted by women.
Maddow currently divides her time between Manhattan and western Massachusetts, where she lives with her partner of 10 years, artist Susan Mikula.
Maddow has hosted a popular liberal talk radio show on Air America since 2004. She has also been a frequent guest commentator on political talk shows like MSNBC's Tucker and CNN's Paula Zahn Now, and is currently a regular panelist on MSNBC's Race for the White House With David Gregory.

Which is geting poorer ratings than their regular normal schedule.
You might say "he" has a "split" personality...
What’s amazing is that the gay community wants to be fully accepted by America, YET, they continue to self segregate themselves as Gay-Host, Gay Teacher, Gay Presidential Candidate, etc. Why can’t Rachel Maddow be a TV host. Oh yeah, it would undercut her identity politics that she has used to get the gig. Besides, I thought David Thusther had his own show.... s/
As the dam breaks and a flood of viewers leave PMSNBC, the network is simnply trying to plug the hole in the dyke.
Hard to fathom!
Aside from all the standard posts...a question: “Where is Dan Abrams going? Was he fired? Did he resign? Is he moving to another network/time?
Ladies - start your diesel engines!!
What is it with lesbians that they always seem to want to look like teenage boys? If they’re not attracted to men then why are they attracted to masculine women?
Is... a puzzlement.
Exactly, if you are a woman truly attracted to women, why would you want a woman that looks like a man? That makes no sense.
I suspect many were hurt or abused by a man in their lives, and haven’t gotten over it.
LOL! FReeper humor BUMP! (read it all)
Having longer, styled hair, wearing makeup, wearing traditionally feminine tailored slacks and blouses(never mind dresses and skirts) and wearing shoes with a heel is surrendering to the patriarchal ideals inflicted on womyn by men over the centuries. To reject lookism is to strike a blow against the patriarchy (or something like that...)
There’s panic at MSNBC. Instead of reporting interesting stories, they attack FNC. I doubt many listeners tune in to hear attacks on FNC. Olberman reminded me or a rabid dog when I happened to click on his show and he screamed BORâs name.
BTW, what happened to Dan Abrams? Did his endless tirades against competing stations cause him to lose his job? Not a smart way to build viewers.
Poor Dan, it’s always sad being thrown over for another man...
I guess I do. I have never heard of this person, but judging from "her" picture I could have guessed what I do not care to know.
Besides, I had a crush on him when I was younger, so I don't need those bad mental connections. I still haven't gotten over the sitcom episode of "How I Met Your Mother" where Doogie Howser had sex with with my favorite actress Jane Seymour. Ugh! That was just so wrong on so many levels!
Now Keanu Reeves (as posted by reagan_fanatic), on the other hand, has bought into the whole global warming scam, and he admits he sees Democrat voters (dead people) so he's fair game. ; )
Liberace was a great piano player but some music critics said he sucked on the organ.
U guys are making me LMFAO. Man, I love the FR for laughs.
MSNBC has officially gone down the drain.
