Geraghty: Two Bits of Data Suggesting ... Hillary?
National Review ^ | August 20, 2008 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 08/20/2008 3:18:51 PM PDT by Oliver Optic

From Jim Geraghty's CampaignSpot blog at National Review:

Soren Dayton, writing over at The Next Right:

A very good source is telling me that multiple DNC members have told him that Hillary is the person. While not immediately intuitive, Clinton is the candidate who one can easily imagine helping with Barack Obama's numbers. Which seem to be ... in bad shape? Who else would fundamentally shift the numbers? You could see her bringing Democrats back home, etc., in a way that none of the other candidates could.

By the way, she would probably school most Republican VP candidates in the debates. And she and Bill know how to attack attack attack.

Meanwhile, arriving in my e-mailbox moments ago:

Hillary Clinton will campaign for Senator Barack Obama in Florida’s Orange County, Palm Beach County, and Broward County on Thursday, August 21.

In Orange County, Hillary Clinton will meet with officials from the Sheet Metal Workers International Association. Media may cover this event, but it is not open to the public.

Darn! I also am getting the feeling it will be the BEAST FROM HELL!! OH GAWD, spare us!!

Rose, on a positive note I will look forward to your humorous posts in ALL CAPS! ;) I think Mrs. Clinton will be the nominee and that Barry will be swept under the rug. Fear not, though...Mrs. Clinton will lose.

Don’t forget. Hildabeast has about 20 million in campaign debt to pay off. I could see a deal being made.

Funny, but putting aside conservative moonbattery, as much as I think Hillary would be willing to "off" Obama, she is not going to accept a VP nomination on the assumption that she will actually be able to make it happen at some point after 2 years have passed. That's just silly, as is the other stuff.

The real calculation for her is whether she is better off with an open 2012, or with a run in 2016 after 8 years as VP. In 2016, she will be exactly 70 years old. McCain is older than that, but it is still deferring her ambition for a long time. I think she would like to ride to the rescue in 2008, and if that doesn't happen, she'll bide her time until 2012.

"That man is going to have a shelf life shorter than cheese dogs on warm afternoon."

Cheese dogs under a heat lamp? Or that phoney Big Foot:

Oh Boy Obama is like that phoney Big Foot frozen in that block of ice. When Hilary gets the heat lamps going, all that’s going to be left is a empty Halloween suit in a puddle of water. I can hear that Wizard of Oz sequence:

“Look what you have done! I’m melting...melting...oh, what a world, what a world! Who would have thought that some little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness.”

I think Hill and Bill are too smart to get involved with Obama. Think about it. Hillary wants to be POTUS. Her next, and probably only, shot will be 2012. If she gets involved now, and looses, then she is tarnished. If she get involved and wins, then she is tied-up for 2012.

I disagree that it's Hill. I think any talk of her is a decoy.

If Hillary is his VP candidate & they lose in the general, she is out as a future candidate for the big one. Losers are not invited back.

If they are elected and nothing happens to Obama, odds are it’s 8 more years before she has a shot at the nomination again.

So, it seems to me that she wouldn’t want the VP nod now unless she truly believed that A) they will win *AND* B) for some reason Obama will not be able to run in 2012, thus allowing her to be the standard bearer in 4 years.

Without A&B happening it is not a smart move for her to take the VP slot.

It will kill his “Change” theme. :-)

It also makes him look even weaker. Last week he was being criticized for caving in to the Clintons giving them too much time at the convention.

I doubt she wants to be Obama’s VP.

What other options does she have? To sit in the Senate for the next 4 to 8 years? I don't think she wants that either. (I know I wouldn't want to play second-fiddle to Smucky-Chucky!) Besides, Obama may conclude that he has to have Hillary to shore-up his declining poll numbers.

That will be fun. I wonder which one gets the Oval Office if she’s the VP, and who gets to sleep on the couch?

That would bring conservatives out of the woodwork by the millions, who would not vote for McCain, just to vote against Hillary. Ain’t going to happen.

Yeah, i think that’s it. There is no way she is at the top of the ticket. She’s going to watch the party twist in the wind.

Obama/Clinton is not nearly as likely as
Clinton/Obama.

There would be NO downside for him in accepting a demotion. It would beat being junior senator from IL. He becomes the heir apparent and stands to acquire “unimpeachable” experience.

The Dem coalition would remain strongly together. It is their most potent possible ticket.

It takes only a smattering of wiser superdelegates to accomplish this.

You’ll feel unclean even thinking this ... but pull for Nobama to keep his disintegrating allure together for at least another week.

Do you think Johnson accepted the VP spot because he expected to knock off Kennedy? No, he did it because he wanted to be President in 8 years.

If he was involved in the plot, which I think is entirely possible, he damn well didn't initiate it. Who do you go to to whack the President of the US? Is Hillary going to call the people she used to clean up the Foster murder? That could be a pretty scary phone call to make when you are talking about a President and not an underling, and when you are not the President. Can you imagine being caught? Bill's lies couldn't get her out of that one.

Point being is, I don't think she would accept the VP slot on the notion that she was going to whack the President of the United States, our jokes about food tasters notwithstanding.

I would not be surprised if Hillary is the choice. If not then Biden. The Hillary choice would be an act of panic on Obama's part based on his sinking poll numbers..
