Blowin' In The Wind: Bloomberg's Green Energy Plan (Windmills On NYC Bridges & Skyscrapers)
CBS News ^ | Aug 20, 2008 | Magee Hickey

Posted on 08/20/2008 7:17:41 AM PDT by presidio9

Mayor Bloomberg is proposing a "green" plan that has the potential to drastically change the New York City skyline and shores. It's part of his effort to make New York the most energy efficient city in the nation.

The mayor's "windmill power plan" is the boldest environmental proposal yet from the billionaire independent, who has been trying to make energy efficiency a legacy of his administration.

Speaking at a major conference on alternative energy Tuesday night in Las Vegas, Bloomberg proposed putting windmills on top of city bridges, and skyscrapers, and turbines in the Hudson and East Rivers.

In terms of offshore locations, aides to the mayor told CBS 2's Magee Hickey, the city is looking at the generally windy coast off of Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island for the turbines, which could provide 10 percent of the city's electricity in just 10 years.

The plan also includes the use of solar panels, possibly on the roofs of public and private buildings:

"When it takes to producing clean power, we're determined to make New York the number one city in the nation," said Bloomberg.

To show how serious he is, the mayor had lunch with T. Boone Pickens - the oil baron trying to build the world's largest wind farm in Texas - to talk about possibilities for such technology in New York City. Bloomberg gave companies until September 19 to submit innovative proposals to make the city "greener" by 2030:

"It would be a thing of beauty if when "Lady Liberty" looks out on the horizon, she not only welcomes new immigrants to our shores but lights their way with a torch powered by an ocean wind farm," the mayor said.

Just wait til the greenies find minced Peregrine falcon on the sidewalk.

They’ll sue the city and all the windmills will come down.

Why don’t these fools just put up a nuke plant or two and stop deluding themselves?

I see the flim-flam man is really getting around.

There is some sort of “energy conference” going on in Las Vegas.

Bill Clinton proposed that the entire state of Nevada be pulled OFF the grid.

In the old days, the mob wouldn’t have let him live another 24 hours.

This is a truly flaky idea.

Skyscrapers and bridges are not designed for the additional lateral and dynamic loading that installation of wind turbines would impose on the supporting structures, to say nothing of the problems involved in maintaining the turbine at such height, or the risk to life and property in the event of a structural failure.

Putting them at sea is possible, I guess, but a whole different set of problems arise in that situation.

I suggest the mayor popularize his idea by wearing, and by urging other New Yorkers to wear, beanie-propeller hats. The symbolism will be unmistakable.

I read on here somewhere this week that it takes 10,000 of thos huge wind turbines to equal one coal-fired electrical plant.

New York is missing out by not putting wind power on all the cabs. Good grief look at the chance to deliver energy to anywhere in the city. Are you listening Mayor? Why, you could even paint all the thangs on top of the cabs.

Now that would be right purdy to look at.

Hope he’s consulting with engineers about stress related vibration on metal, etc.

Im quite sure you won't be seeing a 5MW turbine perched on top of the Empire State Building anytime soon, but using solar electric windows is a recent breakthrough that will be available in the next few years.

I think they could do a lot better if every on had a hose stuck up their back side...we all know how full of they are! think of the gas they would save to run their cars. that would be cheaper than the propane that T.Boone is promoting

As much as I love wind turbines, this seems purely symbolic.

If only we could invent an engine for converting the idiotic and socialistic utterances of environmentalists to pure energy, we could probably take over for the Sun for a while so it could take a much needed vacation.
