President Medvedev of Russia yesterday promised a shattering blow against any foreign power that moved against Russian citizens.
The threat will compound the fears of former Soviet states, which are concerned that they could be next after Russias attack on Georgia.
If someone thinks they can kill our citizens, kill soldiers and officers fulfilling the role of peacekeepers, we will never allow this, Mr Medvedev told a group of Second World War veterans in Kursk. Anyone who tries to do this will receive a shattering blow.
He continued: Russia has the capabilities - economic, political and military. Nobody has any illusions left about that.
Russias incursion into Georgia, and its reluctance to leave, has alarmed former Soviet states such as Ukraine and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The war was designed in part to send a message to the former Soviet states that you cant solve your problems by running to give the West a hug, Liliya Shevtsova, an analyst at the Carnegie Centre in Moscow, said.
At the start of the war, Mr Medvedev said it was his constitutional right to defend the lives and dignity of Russian citizens. Georgias allies now fear that Russia will begin to throw its weight around in defence of the millions of ethnic Russians who live outside the motherland.
The break-up of the Soviet Union left a huge Russian diaspora outside the country. There are more than 8 million ethnic Russians in Ukraine, 4.5 million in Kazakhstan and 1.2 million in the Baltic states.
Russia justified its attack on Georgia by insisting that it was acting to protect the 90 per cent of South Ossetians who have Russian passports.

Dear Comrade Medvedev,
Bite Me.
Sincerly,
Me.
It is not going to get any better , if you don’t want to surrender you will have to fight . Nuke em . Nuke em now . Repeat . I’ll bet they can’t even jump start their missiles .
If they are your citizens, tell them to come home and stop trying to colonize the countries of the former Russian empire.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."
We better cross them and be prepared to crush them first.
Otherwise, prepare to live the years 1939-1945 all over again.
When will we ever learn?
....I think he means it....
ok...let’s see if I understand Russian logic.
Invading a country is “peacekeeping”.
Anyone defending themselves against this “peacekeeping” are guilty of “genocide.”
And...
Any country that dares to attemt to defend themselves have provoked a “defensive” reaction from Russia, possibly with nukes.
Where have I heard THAT kind of talk before.....??
What’s next? Will he start beating podiums with his shoe?
Any Russian citizen living outside of Russia should be immediately deported back to Russia.
If you're Russian, you can't live in our country. Simple.
No more excuse to invade our country.
My first thought as well. He’s channeling Khrushchev.
The problem we have with Putin is that in the old days of the USSR the leadership were political entities. While they did not have to be concerned about support of the people they still needed to play the political game among themselves to remain in the graces of power. So they came up in the system with at least some awareness of political boundaries.
But with Putin that is not the case. What we have with Putin is a man that came up in the KGB by projecting an unpolished animal instinct and probably always resented the any chain of restraint from those in power. Well, now Putin is the power and still an animal that resents restraint.
Russians never look happy in their pictures.
He needs a little Bobby:

All Russian passports and Visas should be immediately revoked, cancelled, rendered null and void, and all holders of same should be ordered out of whatever country they happen to be fouling.
