McCain visits oil rig to pump up drilling

Republican John McCain is scheduled to make it today to an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico to promote his energy policy -- and bash Democratic rival Barack Obama.

The Democratic National Committee is handing out "ExxonMcCain '08" bumper stickers to reporters today, along with a stress reliever shaped like an oil drum. The antiwar advocacy group MoveOn.org is planning protests across the country, including one at noon today at Republican Party offices in Boston.

"Senator Obama opposes new drilling," McCain plans to say, according to excerpts released by his campaign. "He has said it will not 'solve our problem' and that 'it's not real.' He's wrong, and the American people know it. This platform we are at today sits above a field of 160 million barrels of oil, and is capable of producing on a daily basis 55,000 barrels of oil and 72 million cubic feet of natural gas."

Democrats also said that the rig McCain is touring, called Genesis, is a joint project of Exxon and Chevron, among the oil companies making huge profits. They also said that the rig took 10 years to produce any oil.

Johnny Mac needs to drag along and place an empty chair for these kinds of events showing his opponent and sycophants like Pelosi are missing in action.

In addition to being just plain wrong, the dems are in the clear minority on this issue. They go down this path at their peril.

Huh I guess we should close down the medical schools according to Pelosi and Reid, afterall it takes 10 years to be an MD.(4 years undergrad, 4 years medical school, and 2 years of residency and internship).

I’m glad the campaign followed up on this one. I think it’s a solid campaign stop that will hopefully get some press.

Maybe Democrats don’t care if they are wrong or in the minority. They want to be purists on these enviro. issues.

Or I should say, they may not care if in the minority now, but after the election, if Obama loses, Democrats will then go into navel gazing mode about why they can’t win the presidency.

And then a group such as Bill Clinton’s old Democrat Leadership Council will struggle for power in the party with the Daily Kos crowd. Then the old debate about ideological purity vs. trying to win elections, by appealing to more people than just the lunatic fringe base will begin.

"They also said that the rig took 10 years to produce any oil."

Not true.

"Developing the Genesis field began with a discovery well Chevron drilled in 1988 that foretold of the area's vast petroleum wealth. Further drilling over the next few years confirmed the presence of oil and gas reserves, but the deepwater recovery technology of the day was considered too costly, risky, and complex to exploit the field."

"Chevron conducted feasibility studies of both concepts in 1994 and by May 1995, chose the spar concept to meet the design, budget, and time considerations."

Production Start Date: December 1998

If my math is correct, that is a little over 3.5 years for this rig to be conceived until production.
