Rightwing fodder-- Barack Obama Invesco Field convention tickets picture upside down US flags- an international symbol of distress.

The DNC tickets printed for Barack Obama's acceptance speech at Invesco Field show an upside down US flag on both sides. This is the international symbol of extreme distress. FOX 9 reported:

Some viewers contacted 9NEWS Saturday, questioning the design of the credentials to see Sen. Barack Obama accept the Democratic Party's presidential nomination at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

The viewers say with the stars and blue field in the lower left corner, it looks like an upside down American flag. Published flag etiquette states the stars should always be displayed in the upper left corner. An upside down flag represents an international symbol of extreme distress.

Matt Chandler with the Obama campaign says the flag is not upside down. He says it is a stylized flag designed to blend the stars on Senator Obama's shirt with the flag blowing in the wind.

Natalie Wyeth with the Democratic National Convention Committee sent 9NEWS the following statement Saturday night: "The DNCC community credentials incorporate patriotic design elements. They do not depict an actual American flag. The DNCC has full and complete respect for the flag and all rules of display."

They have the same semaphore graphics that I used - but I pulled them up through Google.

I was working from my recollection of this article in the old Straight Dope columns by Ed Zotti (a/k/a Unca Cecil Adams).

The only time I have ever caught Zotti in a mistake was in my own area of expertise, and he owned up like a man. I would trust him way before Wiki.

Wiki does mention the Nazi use of a similar symbol. I never knew where it came from. But I had heard on FR in the past that it was from a nuclear disarmament symbol (likely, I forgot the semaphore aspect).

Just looked it up on Wiki today. Never heard any of the other thoughts on its origin (broken cross, Nazis or anything else) before today.

If you check the Straight Dope article I linked, you can see that the runic meaning has been out there a long time.

Would be just like the Nazis to be dredging up old runes for their tanks.

Your article mentions that the original author did think of the cross, but then went with the crow foot design for the ND. Wiki was not so clear on that. Again, it's Wiki, so things must be taken with a grain of salt and some decent skepticism...
