CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela will take control of cement plants and offices belonging to Mexico's Cemex as of midnight on Monday after failing to reach an agreement in nationalization talks, the government said.

< >

The government said it paid $552 million for an 85 percent stake in Switzerland's Holcim's local unit and $267 million for 89 percent of the shares in France's Lafarge's local unit.

"Lafarge is working to protect as best as it can the interests of its shareholders and of its staff on the ground," a spokeswoman for Lafarge said earlier in the day, declining any further comment.

Reuters was unable to reach a representative for Holcim Venezuela or Cemex.

When will these private companies learn? Socialists nationalize. Then turn fascist. It happens four times out of five. Enough so that if I were heavily invested in a private company operating in a foreign country, I’d watch their elections. The minute a socialist came to power, I’d sell.

What did Sam Houston say to Davy Crockett when they saw the Mexican army approaching?

“I didn’t know we were pouring concrete today...”

I remember when the Chilean gov’t took over General Tire's operations years ago. Things went well for the gov’t for about five years or so. Then machinery started breaking down and they couldn't buy replacement parts. By the end of about 7 years, output was less than 10% of what it was prior to the takeover. Chile would have received more in royalties and taxes in those years had General Tire been able to keep the property. Socialists never learn...

I think they want a port where they are and not under our guns. Venezuela allows them to give us the finger and maybe cruise some nuke subs past us but they can do that anyway.

I think that would be a minute late and a sale short.

Cemex, ironically, is Mexico’s state owned (socialist) cement company. Just like Pemex, the state owned (and slovenly run) oil company.

So in a way it is socialism getting a taste of socialism, with respect to Cemex, at least.

But, golly, it'll be different this time. They promise!

Lets see how fast investors can flee Venezuela...

It is hard to feel sorry for companies that try to do business with socialist and then expect the socialist to not behave like a socialist...

Oil isn't going to save Venezuela from the consequences of state run socialism. I hope they enjoy their ride to hell because the destination is far worse than the ride...

Chavez tried to rig the Mexican elections and came within an inch of putting his man into office.

This is payback.

Of course, he isn’t just going after Mexican interests, he’s gone after the Brits, and now the French and the Swiss.

He’s a practicioner of Mugabean Vampire Economics. A country that is based on looting will eventually cannibalize itself. If he is unable militarily to seize his neighbor his followers must eventually loot one another.

Venezuelans have lost their country. The only question now is how bad will it get before Chavez is overthrown, and how high up the chain of command will the coup reach. His replacement will be a general but the generals won’t move until Venezuelans themselves turn the streets into a war-zone.

"there’s a quick way to destroy your economy"

...and coming soon to the U.S. of A. if Obama and the Dem-Libturd Congress could have their way. They want to nationalize the oil industry, housing, auto industry, healthcare, eliminate private property...and on and on...

Ah yes. I keep forgetting, all the other failures, they just didn’t do it RIGHT. They didn’t have the RIGHT people in charge.

I don't think so, its a private corporation. They are one of the biggest companies in the world, including one of the biggest cement-producers in the US, I think they have operations in half the countries in the world.

They were based in Monterrey, and have been acquiring cement companies in about every country you can think of. They were probably in Venezuela long before Chavez came along.
