On the day Mitt Romney bowed out of the presidential race last February, his supporters latched onto something of a consolation prize that appeared to bode well for his political future: the warm embrace of hundreds of conservatives whose seal of approval he had long sought.

Yet as Mr. Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, is said to have emerged as a top contender to be Senator John McCains vice-presidential running mate, a vocal segment of conservative leaders and grass-roots activists have mobilized against him, with some going out of their way to block his path to the Republican ticket.
It is unclear just how large the group of Romney detractors is and how representative it is of the broader conservative movement. Many are evangelicals who flocked to one of Mr. Romneys rivals in the Republican primaries, Mike Huckabee, the Baptist minister and former Arkansas governor whose own hopes for making a repeat presidential run in 2012 or 2016 could suffer if Mr. Romney were named to the ticket.
Indeed, Mr. Huckabee himself aimed a few jabs at Mr. Romney this week, arguing that he would make an unacceptable vice-presidential pick because of his shifting positions on several issues.
Nevertheless, the determined opposition to Mr. Romney highlights the nagging concerns about his ideological authenticity and his Mormon religion that dogged him throughout his primary campaign. It also illuminates the continuing unease Mr. McCain arouses among some evangelicals and other social conservatives who make up an important voting bloc of the Republican base.

The ultimate danger for Mr. McCain is not necessarily that Christian conservatives will not vote for him if he chooses Mr. Romney, but that they will not be as energetic in turning people out to vote,

Everything else aside, if Romney delivered Michigan Obama would be in serious trouble.
As the person in a prior post said, “You come across as a far right whack job. Far right is as bad as far left”
In your world, somehow you agree that it’s “OK” for a great senator Orrin Hatch to serve in the Senate, but we can’t possibly have a POTUS who is a Morman...
What kind of bigotry is that?
Face the music... Romney is the one needed to fight against Obama (McCain certainly can’t do it). Romney is the perfect attack dog who will systematically dismantle all of Obama’s flawed socialist left-wing ideas.
Just open your mind a little, OK?
The Mass GOP was dead and buried long before Romney got there. Saying he killed it is like saying Pataki did the same here in NY. And the major reason why McCain was able to win the nomination was because the lack of a clear front runner allowed Time Magazine and CNN and MSNBC and Newsweek and CBS and NBC to push him over the top with casual voters. I will happily vote for McCain in November, but as long as there was any viable alternative besides Huckabee, there wasn't a single poster on FR with anything but hatred for McCain.
And I disagree that the Republicans can keep right on winning. Obama is a very flawed candidate, but he is by far the best they could come up with in the past generation. The are going to have a hard time topping him. The almost nominated John Edwards this time. I'm guessing that if he loses Hillary Clinton will be the nominee, and she's definitely beatable.
I’d say about a good 20% of Mass citizens are conservative to very conservative. More than half would support a Republican. It’s just the Mass Republicans act as an alternative faction of the Democrat party.
How come Guiliani and Bloomberg were willing to make political enemies, even amongst city unions and turn NY around ,and Mitt did nothing? How dumb is that? Well, not much if all you are doing is the minimal political ticket punching to run for President( One term, one time ).
I mean, good looking, tall, good hair, and one single term where you spent your second half setting up your nomination run? Talk about delusions.
Mitt, attack dog. Name me one instance where Mitt went after anyone, anywhere?

I thought so, but couldn’t remember.
Depends what the meaning of is is.
The preciptating event of was in March 2000. The scheme became public later that same year. The whistle blower was fired in 2001. Romney took office in 2003.
“In your world, somehow you agree that its OK for a great senator Orrin Hatch to serve in the Senate, but we cant possibly have a POTUS who is a Morman...”
A US Senator represents his state, a president represents the entire country. It is all a matter of degree of power one holds. Because Utah is a Mormon state, they will most certainly have a Mormon senator; although I don’t think Senator Hatch is an example of a devout Mormon. Romney is devout, although he seems to waffle about it.
I am an analytical person that weighs pros and cons for decisions (AKA an open mind). Romney is a poor choice for VP - he brings nothing but negatives (his devout Mormonisn being his worst IMO) except for the state of Utah and a scattering of voters from the primary, which he bought with his personal fortune. Romney did not do well in the South, which is the solid base for the GOP.
Mike Huckabee, although I know he would not be a good choice either, to contrast things...would actually solidy the Southern vote essential to win.
“Face the music... Romney is the one needed to fight against Obama (McCain certainly cant do it).”
I suggest you learn how to “read the music.” Romney cannot and will not accomplish what you think he will. Plus, McCain showed at Saddleback that he is sharper than given credit. No, Romney is NOT the choice. However, I must admit, of those whose names have been floated, I don’t see any that look good. Maybe McCain should tap Senator Tom Cole for Oklahoma? Or maybe ask former Oklahoma Congressman J.C. Watts, who is about as eloquent as they come.

head office who's come down to the warehouse to talk about
productivity benchmarks and layoffs."http://www.crikey.com.au/Politics/20080129-US08-Mitt-Romney-bland-all-the-way-down.html
