Georgia is not blameless. There is no doubt, as a result of the huge ethinic cleansing that occurred in those provinces in the mid-1990s, where tens and hundreds of thosuands were displaced, that some of the forces exacted revenge.

But the basic facts, IMHO, are that the Russians instigated a reaction by Georgia which they had been planning on and then took abject advantage of it in the ways you just mentioned.

Having said that, I do not believe the Russians accounted for or were prepared for the visit of the five Presidents from Poland, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia which placed them in harms way and caused the Russian juggernaught to pause...or for the rapid insertion by Bush of US military personnel and equipment under the humanitarian mission goal.

And it is a bit simple. At least part of this entire thing is about us, not Georgia. We made the Georgians into our "little brother" and Serbia has long been considered the "little brother" of Russia.

So, this is a symbolic payback for our attack on Serbia. Russia blew up the bridge, has accused the Georgians of genocide, and is operating within Georgia calling themselves "peacemakers". They want to take the president of Georgia to court for crimes against humanity just as we participated in the criminalization of Milosevic.

They are dropping bombs in Georgia that say "For Bush" and "For NATO".

We’re seeing a replay of Kosovo, except in a more dangerous setting. The role the late Slobodan Milosevic played nine years ago is assumed today by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, while Vladimir Putin is putting on the hat of British prime minister Tony Blair and U.S. President Bill Clinton.

I definitely will. Unfortunately, Russia has exposed just how vulnerable all of these new democracies are. We need to ensure that Russia does not undo all of the hard work and resources we put in to win the Cold War, or at least Round 1 of the Cold War.

Oh yes, and I forgot, the power plant. The Russians just blew up a power plant. I remember when we bombed the one in Serbia quite well.

Please pass along my encouragement to the people of Georgia.

Were it up to me they'd be unpacking several hundred crates of shiny new Javelin missiles right about now....

BTW, what are your opinions of US vulnerability to the kind of cyber attack Georgia suffered at the hands of Russia ?

Well done, Jeff, I just wish I shared your optimism about this situation.

From what I understand, we have no military in Georgia -- Gates made it clear that supplies would be distributed by aid organizations. Europe, and Germany in particular, is overwhelmingly dependent on Russia's gas pipe line from the Balkans, and NATO's announcement that it will admit Georgia is not much more than an empty gesture, since the Euros haven't the will, or military, to defend themselves or any other member. And our illustrious State Dept. is still whining about how we need Russia as a negotiator with Iran...nothing like trusting the wolf to represent the lambs.

We have not yet used our greatest weapon...Wall St. It is time to let the Rooskies know who holds all the cards in this poker game. It is time to get every American bank, mutual fund, insurance company, foundation and every other institution to start selling every Russian stock that we own. Choke the Rooskies in billions of overnight losses and convince the Europeans to do the same. Let the Rooskies know that if you want to be a bully, there is not a single place on earth outside of Russia to park your rubles!

Our military is in there. We still have advisors there, we are inserting new teasm to assess the logistics, and ourt aircraft and ships will deliver the material and then give it out to the organizations that we choose, along with the Georgians to distribute it.

I expect, over time, material and equipment will build and the more we get in there the more buffer and shield we will provide the Georgian people as pressure builds for the Russians to withdraw.

Time will tell...but I believe Georgia will stay free if we stand strong.

We are prepared. We have been under cyber attack from Al QUida, the Chinese, and others...attempts to get inside, shutdown, etc...for several years and we have an entire command dedicated to countering it.
