Obama slams Thomas, hugs McCain

Asked his definition of "rich," McCain tossed off "$5 million," then seemed to recognize comments he had tossed off in the past that had come back to him in ads by the opposition.

"I'm sure that comment will be distorted," McCain said. "The point is we want to keep people's taxes low. ... I don't want to raised anybody's taxes."

McCain, who in the past has rarely talked about his captivity during the Vietnam War after he crashed as a Navy aviator, spoke of the mistreatment by guards — and of the guard he showed his faith by tracing a cross on the ground.

On the justices-he-wouldn't-nominate question, McCain had a near-majority — Justice Bader Ginsburg (nominated by President Bill Clinton), Stephen G. Breyer (Clinton), David Souter (the first President Bush, John Paul Stevens (President Gerald Ford).

"This nomination should be based on the criteria of proven record of strictly adhering to the Constitution of the United States of America, and not legislating from the bench," McCain said.

McCain named the chief justice and Justice Samuel Alito — President Bush's nominees — as among his favorites.

McCain got a huge cheer when he spoke up for charter schools, vouchers and home schooling. "Choice and competition," he said. "Home schooling works."

I really liked McCain tonight. He really just built his support tonight. He is the more I've been following outside of the Press playing I gotcha been running as an unashamed conservative. His record always was a very conservative one. It is nice to see him put so clearly to words those convictions. John McCain is going to be a great President if for nothing else that he has shown how seriously he would take the job. It will be a refreshing thing to have a man who loves America enough not to patronize those who as he said "want to legislate defeat". His comments about protecting the honor of our soldiers and bringing them home in victory should bring pause to those who seem to treasure their personal store of McCain antipathy as if it is some badge of intellectual and moral supremacy when it is really just childish bitterness. Conservatives are better than the way they have been behaving, McCain certainly deserves scrutiny but for them to be lazy and not give a man who is set to become one of the greatest conservative leaders of our generation is not just unfortunate but a testament to how they have lost their way while McCain has clearly found his.

As good as he’s doing now, it will all be negated if he chooses a pro-abortion running mate (like he’s hinting at).

He can easily cream Obama, and it’s his to lose.

Oh he couldn't. He just couldn't!

i’ll vote for mccain, no matter who the running mate

because i do not want the democrats to control all three, the u.s. house and senate and presidency.

it would be a mandate for another fdr or lbj.

and, seriously—think about the u.s. supreme court!

McCain was not my first or even second choice. But I will vote for him.

Yeah, that’ll work, if he wants to lose BIG. He needs a Conservative running mate like SC Gov. Mark Sanford or RI Gov. Don Carcieri, not a loser liberal like Slick Willard.

I think McCain needs a female VP, and he could do with a little of this:

I can’t wait for the head-to-head debates. Obama is about to “Uh, hmmmm” himself right into a landslide defeat.

“and it’s his to lose”.

That is so true. He did really good tonight. And the last couple of weeks. But who he picks for VEEP will be so important to his base (and me).

On the other hand, Barry supporters really don’t care what he says. I can’t wait to get to work Monday too see how many watched or understood. He could have said..”I am going to put a shock collar on you and take you to the pound” and that would be o.k.

Please, John, throw your base a crumb and pick a good running mate. I just don’t think I can stand 4 to 8 years of Barry and Co.

(like he’s hinting at).

I have to wonder if he's doing the hinting or if the MSM is yet again trying to get the base PO'd at McCain.

I doubt it. I think that the National Enquirer said that McCain is looking at liberals for VP, not one of them tabloids rags like CNN, CBS, NBC, or ABC. So it’s legit.

I was amazed. He answered the questions well and displayed his life experience/ accomplishments - unlike Obama. I LOVED the contrast between Obama’s confessed drinking/drugging/self-obsession with McCain’s military POW experience. I saw nothing to warrant the grumpy old man stereotype.

She doesn't want anything to do with it, does she? Anything to indicate she'd accept?

Its all political fantasy.

There is no indication that McCain has discussed anything with Condi.

And she likely would not run with McCain just to secure a portion of the nations black vote. The reasons for her running would have to be more substantive I'd bet, like handling the strategy for Russia as a VP.

We will not have seen the last of Condi after this election. I believe that one day she will run on a Republican ticket. She still is quite young for the office.
