PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Eight people who resigned from Gov. Don Carcieri's Commission on Hispanic Affairs have denounced Carcieri and his executive order cracking down on illegal immigrants.
The eight commissioners quit Thursday and held a news conference Friday. An executive order that Carcieri signed in March requires state police and prison officials to identify illegal immigrants for possible deportation.
It also requires the executive branch to use a federal database to verify the immigration status of new hires. Former commissioner Juan Garcia called the order "social genocide." He said it will increase racial profiling of Hispanics by police and discourage illegal immigrants from contacting authorities in an emergency.
Carcieri says illegal immigrants should not be in Rhode Island and are costing the goverment money. He has said he will not rescind the order

Governor Carcieri's statement regarding the Commission on Hispanic and Latino Affairs
First and foremost, the Governor appreciates the service of the individuals to the Commission, their commitment to the promotion of the Hispanic and Latino community and to the State of Rhode Island.
The Commission was created in 1991 to respond to the rapid growth of the Hispanic community and to act as a focal point for public awareness and dialogue of the needs and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino communities in Rhode Island.
The Governor remains committed to the Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs and will seek members of the community to fill these open positions. The Hispanic community is an important part of the fabric of the Rhode Island community and they will continue to have a voice in the Carcieri Administration.
The Governor thanks Reverend Nogueras, Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Antonio Barajas, Rebecca Flores, and Ray Guzman for continuing to serve on the Commission and providing a voice for their communities.
It should be noted, this Commission is separate and distinct from the Governor's Advisory Panel on the Executive Order, created in June, to address unintended consequences on legal immigrations
Shame on you, Gov, for using E-Verify...
How dare you catch fraudulant applicants...
Kudos to Governor Carcieri, and a big, fat razzberry to the activists who are trying to destroy our national sovreignty.
Good riddance!
I wish this said
“BREDESEN says illegal immigrants should not be in TENNESSEE and are costing the goverment money. He has said he will not rescind the order
and
“An executive order that BREDESEN signed in March requires state police and prison officials to identify illegal immigrants for possible deportation.”
Good move on the Governor’s part. The McCain campaign should be considering Carcieri rather than Tom Ridge for VP.
On the contrary, mi amigo, if you take your illegal ass home you can contact as many authorities as you like in an emergency.
Yes, but RI’s too small a prize and it’s doubt D.C. would even deliver it.
Thing is that at it's core this crap is racist. Some folks believe that people of a certain racial group should be able to come into our country, steal from the taxpayer and break our laws with no consequences.
Despite the Providence Urinal’s non-stop attacks on the Governor for issuing this executive order the people of Rhode Island are squarely behind Carcieri on this issue. A recent poll conducted by a professor at Rhode Island College showed that 70% of Rhode Islanders supported the Governors order. With a 7.7% unemployment rate and skyrocketing public school budgets I think the people here are FINALLY starting to “get it” in regards to our illegal problem.
Gov. Don Carcieri is the example I cite that blows away the dubious and shameful argument made by the Slick Willardbots that because you happen to have an “R” after your name, if you’re in a liberal/Democrat state, it’s A-OK to govern like a liberal Democrat. RI is a Democrat state, has been since the mid-1930s purge by Gov. Theodore Francis Green, yet somehow Carcieri governs like a REAL Republican and Conservative — and, gasp (!) managed to be reelected as one in the terrible 2006 election even as liberal scum Chafee went down in flames refusing to follow the Carcieri model. This, folks, is what I expect our Governors (and Presidents) to do.
Sounds like Gov Don Carcieri is the real deal — a true conservative Republican.
Ideally, a good ticket this year would’ve been Sanford-Carcieri, a Southerner (Conservative Episcopalian)/North Easterner (Catholic).
Anyone else remember the HBO original movie “The Second Civil War” ?

Immigration
Immigration is a major factor in the story. When other states come to the aid of Idaho, the Chinese Governor of Rhode Island sends a battalion of crack Chinese troops. When the mayor of Los Angeles holds a press conference, he speaks in Spanish and a national reporter seeking more information asks everyone at City Hall “Habla usted inglés?”
At one point, the President decides that Dwight Eisenhower is the ideal role model for this kind of crisis. So he asks his six speech-writers for a statement he can attribute to Eisenhower. They confer to make up a suitable Eisenhower-sounding quote. Of course, none of them is American. There’s a Mexican, Asian, Arab, Irishman, Canadian, and Russian. The movie also highlights an Alabama Congressman who’s a Hindu with a southern accent.
Good for him. I hope some hispanics with sense replace the idiots that quit.
If it ticks off CHA... it must be good ;-)
Carcieri has been speculated on before now. Terrific guy. Under the radar.
Only down side is the rat’s would take over the Governorship, same problem with Jindal.
I’m willing to throw little roady under the bus though. ;)
That’s the downside if he vacates the Governorship, since the Lt Gov and Gov run separately in RI (just like in LA). For some reason, the Lt Governorship has been a tough nut for us to crack, we haven’t won it in years (though have come close). Lincoln Almond appointed one in ‘97 when Bob Weygand moved to the House, but Bernie Jackvony came up short in ‘98 (of course, had he won, Jackvony, and not Carcieri, would be Governor today — or at least he would’ve been elected in ‘02).
