Russia alarmed by US-Poland defense missile deal, calls Poland "a target"

(RTTNews) - The signing of an agreement that allows the United States to build a missile defense shield in Poland amid the backdrop of the invasion of Georgia drew severe criticism from Russia on Friday, who said that the deal is aimed at it.

In the strongest threat Russia has issued against a plan to establish missile defense elements along the borders of former Soviet ally nations, Russia's deputy chief of general staff, Colonel-General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, warned that Poland has become a "target for attack" and that "such targets are destroyed as a first priority."

Addressing a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the Russian resort of Sochi, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said the deal "clearly demonstrates what we had said earlier - the deployment has the Russian Federation as its target."

The United States' chief negotiator of the deal, John Rood views the agreement important for the security of his country, Poland, and its NATO allies. Russia's envoy to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin was quoted as saying that the project has "no relation to the Iranian missile threat but is aimed against Russia."

Russia's envoy to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin was quoted as saying that the project has "no relation to the Iranian missile threat but is aimed against Russia."

Why would you say that, Demitry? Is Russia planning to launch missiles at Europe any time in the future?

the deployment has the Russian Federation as its target

I'd like Russia to explain how they expect us to "target" anything in Russia with our defensive radar array and interceptor missiles... unless Russia is planning on shooting at our allies, which would only prove that the defensive weapons system was necessary in the first place.

Plus, I've heard say that the missile defense array won't be able to defend against an all out Russian attack anyway.

Which just tells me that Russia is using this an issue to bind together its "citizens" in outrage at an external threat. Different time, different people, same hat.

Big difference is we had real leadership under President Reagan.

And a Maggie Thatcher. Unfortunately neither country has an equal on the horizon.

The Russian leaders (Putin, etc) are not concerned about Poland at this time. They are using this as a distraction from the current goal of securing Georgia. They have no plans of leaving there. I have read comments on other sites and there are plenty of useful idiots believing Russia’s excuses for their violate actions. I feel sorry for the people of Georgia.

We live in interesting times.

Anyone knows a word which meaning is below "pathetic", please, to define this statement? The only case when Poland could become a "target" of a nuclear strike is the World War. Though in such a case everything will be a target, primarily, however, not Poland as it has no strategic weaponry like ICBMs, Air Carriers, satellites...

Pointless, desperately stupid bluster.

Not so much “their” agenda as it is the agenda of the “one” who has always had it in for the Chosen Ones of God.

I sure hope we’re not heading into a situation where we’re hobbled by our 70% oil dependency on foreign sources.

Putin should grasp the fact that countries no longer quiver when the russian bear makes noises, in fact, they do the exact opposite of what they used to do.

Instead of rolling over, they join a different cartel.
