On the day Mitt Romney bowed out of the presidential race last February, his supporters latched onto something of a consolation prize that appeared to bode well for his political future: the warm embrace of hundreds of conservatives whose seal of approval he had long sought.
The enthusiastic ovations Mr. Romney received before and after his speech ending his campaign at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington seemed to signal that Mr. Romney had finally overcome doubts about his conservative credentials, as conservatives embraced him as a bona fide standard-bearer for the movement.
Yet as Mr. Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, is said to have emerged as a top contender to be Senator John McCains vice-presidential running mate, a vocal segment of conservative leaders and grass-roots activists have mobilized against him, with some going out of their way to block his path to the Republican ticket.
It is unclear just how large the group of Romney detractors is and how representative it is of the broader conservative movement. Many are evangelicals who flocked to one of Mr. Romneys rivals in the Republican primaries, Mike Huckabee, the Baptist minister and former Arkansas governor whose own hopes for making a repeat presidential run in 2012 or 2016 could suffer if Mr. Romney were named to the ticket.
Indeed, Mr. Huckabee himself aimed a few jabs at Mr. Romney this week, arguing that he would make an unacceptable vice-presidential pick because of his shifting positions on several issues...

Bingo.
Romney is a draft doger just like Bill Clinton...
He got a deferment and sat out Vietnam in Paris in a mansion for 2 1/2 years...
He loathed the military just like Clinton did...
He’s not fit to be Commander-in-Chief...
Whatever you say genius.
There are only 2 types of MYTH supporters.
Mormons and morons.
When Romney is zinging Obama BIGTIME in the VP debate and at daily seperate appearances (yes the man is mature enough to be let off the leash) you may not like him - you may hate his guts - but deep down you will smile. (Ok, maybe a twisted smile.) :p
BTW, I still want to know who brings more to the table than Romney - traction in several states, a ready-made base of grassroots support and donors, private and gov’t executive experience, previously vetted, youngish, articulate, strong debater. I don’t see anyone else who fits all those bills.
Once again the left tells us exactly what we should do...
I look at his record and his character. Both are appalling. Just because he has a [censored] for the White House and is willing to do “whatever it takes” (bribe and lie) to win doesn’t mean I want to support that person. In fact, he’s the last person claiming an “R” label I want anywhere near elective office, period. He was a [censored] disaster as Governor.
You object to me posting an article? I don't see where Jim Robinson appointed you a thread monitor, to post profanity laced spam in the form of a personal attack.
Jim, someone is stinking up your house, is it Reagan Man or me?
Tell me something good about Huckabee...
I wear attacks from the Slick Willardbots as a badge of honor. :-) Keep crying like stuck pigs, I love it !
It’s always a Democrat. Those bills are sponsored bipartisanly.
You mean radio interview that used to be on Youtube and was taken down ?????
He helped elect this guy...
And Deval still is laughing all the way to Beacon Hill, "Thanks, Mitt, I couldn't have done it without you !"
There must be some kind of disconnect. I don’t see what Coulter, Ingraham, Rush et al see in Romney if what you is true. Perhaps there’s a middleground to be seen...
I know what his motivations are. They aren’t in anybody’s interests but Slick Willard’s. He’ll be happy to turn over the office to Obama as soon as he’s done destroying the national GOP. Just like he did with Deval.
I saw where he was supposedly a missionary for a couple of years, and then later got a high draft lottery number and went on to law school.
Who do you like for VP?
So far, Cantor is my favorite, but there aren't too many deal-breakers for me. I thought McCain was a deal-breaker, but Obama has schooled me. His first earthly miracle was making me love McCain.
fieldmarshaldj: “I want to know what he did as Governor.”
Me, too! What I know of it so far isn’t good.
I could change my mind if a Mitten would simply start listing Romney’s great conservative victories as governor. You know, how he triumphed against big government, stopped gay marriage, prevented abortion, slashed taxes, increased the free market at the expense of government, helped nominate staunch conservatives to key positions...any of the things that “bona fide” conservatives do.
There’s 2-1 Dem voter registration in MA, one of the most liberal states in the country. And consecutive 16 years of GOP governers in a heavily anti-GOP election year. Deval didn’t need help from Mitt to win in moonbatland under those circumstances.
He is a very good speaker, and is good on television. He got a lot of votes, especially in comparison to how much he spent. He brings and keeps Evangelical energy and voters in the Republican fold.
There is a disconnect. I know his record and his motivations. I’ve followed the guy closely for 14 years. He is as trustworthy as Bubba. As well put by another FReeper in this thread, the man is a liar, and a pathological one at that.
