Left Behind Authors Speak Out on McCain Ad 'The One' [LaHaye: Obama not anti-Christ]

CAROL STREAM, Ill., Aug. 15 /Christian Newswire/ -- John McCain's campaign ad "The One" has generated a lot of buzz regarding the "Left Behind Series." Political commentators are comparing McCain's portrayal of competitor Barack Obama with the blockbuster apocalyptic series' depiction of the antichrist. But even the series authors Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins don't think Obama is the antichrist. What may have been created as a farce has generated a firestorm of controversy on the internet.

LaHaye and Jenkins take a literal interpretation of prophecies found in the Book of Revelation. They believe the antichrist will surface on the world stage at some point, but neither see Obama in that role. "I've gotten a lot of questions the last few weeks asking if Obama is the antichrist," says novelist Jenkins. "I tell everyone that I don't think the antichrist will come out of politics, especially American politics."

"I can see by the language he uses why people think he could be the antichrist," adds LaHaye, "but from my reading of scripture, he doesn't meet the criteria. There is no indication in the Bible that the antichrist will be an American."

Jenkins and LaHaye don't take McCain's commercial or the antichrist speculation over Obama too seriously.

Pundits have pointed out that there are similarities between the "Left Behind Series" character Nicolae Carpathia and Obama. Other than some vocabulary and charisma, Carpathia, a young Romanian politician who eventually oversees a one-world government, and Obama don't have much in common. "If even the people who created the character Nicolae Carpathia don't see the comparisons as warranted, then perhaps this is overblown," says Jenkins.

"Left Behind" is a series of 16 apocalyptic novels (1995-2007/Tyndale House Publishers) using end time prophecies in Revelation as a framework. All sixteen books reached the "New York Times" bestseller list with seven reaching the #1 spot. Overall more than 63 million copies have sold in the "Left Behind" product line. Putin is more likely in this bunch:

Ezekiel 38:
Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog (Magogites called by Greeks: Sythians; Russia and surounding territories), the chief prince of Meshech (Msocow) and Tubal (Tobolsk), and prophesy against him (Putin), And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: Persia, (IRAN) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: Gomer (ancient Gaul), and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (modern Turkey) of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.

I would recommend Joel C. Rosenberg's books over the Leave Your Behind books anyday. They have a way of coming to pass. Check them out at http://www.joelrosenberg.com/

I would agree, he does have rock-star popularity, and he does have a Humanist Theology based on Moral Relativism which is the spirit of the Antichrist, but he does not have the wits to carry on this charade for long.
But it does show how easily the real Antichrist can enter the World Stage when the time is right, and how easily even the people who should know better can be fooled.

This has been my assumption from go. It was to test the mechanism for the "real deal's" ascension to power from obscurity in a heartbeat. Looks like the mechanism works pretty well, to me...

our sunday school teacher’s wife thinks there have been antichrists available on “standby” in every generation - they just haven’t been given the “go” sign yet. timing is everything.
i think she’s right...

What should be sobering to the discerning, is the idea that it may well be "the final dress rehearsal", which is done on the afternoon of "opening night"...

No indication that he is really an American either.

(as was said, he’s not even important enough or effective enough for the role)

How about after he gets his hands on the football?

I once had a conversation with a Baptist minister...who’d been around his profession for twenty years...and I simply asked why Baptist ministers were shy on the book of Revelations. He admitted that it was one of those things that the seminary school had often suggested. Its not a positive book...it scares most folks...and its can be read a thousand different ways...which most books in the Bible aren’t written in that fashion. If he had the ability to pull any book out of the Bible...it would be Revelations. I thought it was an interesting conversation.

Only thing it says the antichrist will rise to power suddenly. Pooty-poot has been in power for some time now. Besides hes about as charasmatic as a bucket of cement.

Revelation is actually a very exciting book. It does not stand alone but, rather, brings together many themes from other places in the bible, both new and old testament. Even if you remove it you still have Daniel, Ezekiel and a host of other places equally troubling. If anything, it has the unique “new testament-esque” quality of clarifying the prophesies on these books. In other words, it does not add confusion, it actually reduces it.

Regarding the Left Behind stuff: Considering that most of my Christian life I was Assembly of God and yet a strong Mid tribulationist, I am not particularly popular in my beliefs about this book series or the “tribulation period”.

I beleive that the book of Daniel actuallhas more to say about this than Revelation does.

Meanwhile, Rev 17 and 18 does seem to describe the US to no small degree. And there is a pretty clear warning in Rev 18: 4-5.

I think that is describing Rome and the Vatican.

Hey how are things in "Follow Me To Tennessee?" Obama going to take it? He's got Vermont where I am.

Yes , he does look like Joe Friday, but when a person is iconized their real features become institutionalized and this is the next step of Obama's messianization.

I really love the plug in neon halo.

Al Gore needs one too.

Nah. Obama will never take Tennessee. I think the last poll I saw he had like 27%.

Absolutely correct. But to those who walk in the light, it won't be a surprise, according to Paul.
