Another GOP Senator to Skip Convention
MSNBC ^ | 8/13/08 | Doug Adams

Posted on 08/14/2008 9:00:35 PM PDT by mngran2

Sen. Pat Roberts (KS) is now the eighth Republican senator to announce that they will not attend the GOP Convention in St. Paul, Minn., next month.

Roberts spokeswoman told the Topeka Capital Journal today that Roberts will be campaigning that week, finishing up his 105 county statewide tour during the convention week.

Four others who've announced they won't be attending are -- Ted Stevens (AK), Elizabeth Dole (NC), Gordon Smith (OR), and Susan Collins (ME). All are running for re-election and are in close races. (Collins may have the easiest race, but she's never been a close ally of McCain.)

Three other GOP senators who are retiring this year have also said they'll skip the St. Paul festivities -- Larry Craig (ID), Chuck Hagel (NE) and Wayne Allard (CO).

And the list could grow. Two more GOP senators locked in tough re-election races -- John Sununu (NH) and Roger Wicker (MS) are still undecided...

Has it been the norm in the past for all senators to attend or is this much ado about nothing? Anyone know?

It has never been the case that all go. Susan Collins and Smith aren’t really welcome anyway. They are Republicans but the most disappointing kind.

Ted Stevens will be at IKEA shopping for furniture for his new digs at the Hotel Grey Bar.

“Larry Craig? Do we even need him there in the first place???”

Sure, why not? We can specially equip a private restroom for his own use at the convention hall. Of course, he may also use the public one, as long as it is an escorted trip and we have made some adjustments. If that is the only option, the organizers can specify that the public restroom be modified so as not to have stall dividers under which individuals can swipe their palms facing upward.

Yes, we can accommodate him.

Seeing how the GOP didn’t demand his immediate resignation after his “incident” it would be somewhat hypocritical to disinvite him from the convention. Lay down with dogs, you’re gonna get fleas.

hmm I dont know about roberts.
Ted Stevens (AK),—porkmaster
Elizabeth Dole (NC)-——no comment
Gordon Smith (OR)-—rino
Susan Collins (ME)-—rino
I’d love to see some real conservatives refuse to go or if they went they protested. Hell I would like the real conservative congressmen and senators show up and change their scripts when they get on stage, go to blast the party for even allowing the likes of Mccain and other rinos to even be members

I’m not sure...good question.

I wonder if all the Democrat senators are going to the Socialist-Fest in Denver.

For the most part, that strikes me as a list of senators who never would be missed at the convention. And Larry Craig in particular has a good reason not to go anywhere near MSP for a while.
