I agree with some of this and disagree with some.

From what I've seen ordinary Chinese are taking a lot of pride in a job generally well done, certainly the opening ceremonies were spectacular.

But I also agree there is tremendous resentment toward the government, especially seeing all this lavish spending on the Olympics hard on the heals of the poor response to the earthquake and scandals of party officials cutting corners on school buildings to pocket the extra. Plus, I think many Chinese have been surprised how their country is viewed around the world, with the protests during the torch run.

Who knows, maybe this will be a catalyst for change.

I know one thing, this one just upped the ante big time. Spending 700 million on the opening ceremony only puts more pressure on future countries to try to out do the one before.

What is a groundswell of pride and nationalist fervor in a country where dissent with the official party line is a quick ticket to being blacklisted for employment, jail time, and persecution?

I have been to Tibet and have seen how brutally the Chinese treat them. I have not watched the olympics at all.

The chinese spend billions on a brand new stadium and get 91,000 people to watch the opening ceremonies - Obama puts up a podium in Berlin and gets over twice as many..

Couldn’t agree more. I refuse to watch any of this abomination from our biggest enemy and one of the biggest advocates of oppression and torture on the planet. Anyone who watches the Olympics is a traitor to liberty.

Sounds like a bunch of Democrats. Kind of like how they whine over here about "sending men to the moon while people are starving here on Earth..."

If the attitude over here was to "help the poor" before spending any money on anything else, the result would be that none of us would have anything and everybody would be poor.
