MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — One of the first U.S. army deserters from Iraq to seek refugee status in Canada has been ordered deported.

Jeremy Hinzman deserted the army in 2004 after learning his unit was to be deployed to Iraq.

He refused to participate in what he calls an immoral and illegal war.

Hinzman fled to Canada along with his wife and son and sought refugee status.

Today, he was ordered out of the country by Sept. 23.

The Immigration and Refugee Board rejected his claim in 2005 and the Federal Court of Appeal held that he wouldn’t face any serious punishment if returned to the United States.

Hinzman took his pleas to the Supreme Court of Canada, which also refused to hear the case.

Darn, I thought at first he was being deported from the US.

Now THAT would send a message...

Hey at least this is an indication that Canada is improving. Where is he going to go now? Mexico? He shouldn’t have signed up if he didn’t want to go to war. He also could’ve gotten a dishonorable discharge and left it at that. It wasn’t like he was drafted. Stupid guy.

This guy is obviously not the sharpest crayon in the box.

All he had to do is claim he is a muslim, gay, transexual, and the Canucks woulda thrown money at him.

Just saying.

I guess he didn’t consider the idea that he might be sent to a war he disagreed with when he signed up.

I do think loss of citizenship should be a penalty.

“I do think loss of citizenship should be a penalty.”

The “Starship Troopers” scenario: somebody signs up for military service then doesn’t show up, and the only penalty is that they don’t get the rights and privileges of citizenship (voting and owning property). And they never, ever get a second chance. Oh, and the only punishments are flogging and hanging. No prisons.

“It wasn’t like he was drafted.”

Exactly !

I, as a Canadian, am thrilled that we are deporting the deserters.

We have soldiers fighting and dying in Afghanistan, there is no way, in my opinion, that we should allow deserters to stay in our Country!

Well, he won’t be our problem anymore come September...

let this be a lesson to others who are thinking of shirking the duties they volunteered for, and think they can hide out here , especially while our own soldiers are fighting in Afghanistan.

Hell with him. These deserters are part of the reason Canada is infested with so much left wing thought, after all those draft dodgers in the 60s and 70s. The irony being, so many thousands of Canadians going the other way back then who joined the US forces during Vietnam....

You forgot that he needs to be infected with AIDS too, then he's a shoe-in. ;)

Some rich lefty puke will pay for them to go to Europe or something. This coward will never see justice. Poor kids of his have to live with a weak-kneed father like that.
