The head of Georgia's national security council said Wednesday Russia has sent 50 tanks into the central Georgian city of Gori, despite an agreed-upon ceasefire calling on both sides to retreat to positions they held before fighting began six days ago.

Security council head Alexander Lomaia said that the tanks entered Gori about 9:45 a.m. local time, but there was no independent confirmation of his claim.

“”They asked villagers to hang white flags or handkerchiefs outside their houses if they did not want to be shot, they say.”

The tanks had passed through the village of Rekha at about 11.20am local time. “Behind them (say eyewitnesses) is a whole column of irregulars who locals say are Chechens, Cossacks and Ossetians.

“Eyewitnesses say they are looting, killing and burning. These irregulars have killed three people and set fire to villages. They have been taking away young boys and girls,” said Harding, watching smoke rise from another village, Karaleti.”

“They are attempting to draw fire from the Georgians so they can claim Georgian aggression and start up the war again...typical Soviet style tactics of oppression.”

The next fire they receive should be from the US Airforce. Followed quickly by the army and marines.

Yep. Thats the audio. Russia has a solution for its demographics problem. Unfortunately those little kids are meeting the Cossacks, the Chechen's and the Ossetian Speed Demons first.

Ex-KGB agent Putin has brought back much of the old Russian bear. He has stamped out freedom, crushed opponents, expanded state power, and is now swallowing up satellites and seizing resources. I don’t doubt for a second that he isn’t still pulling the strings.

Russian troops not going to Tbilisi: ministry

Russian troops have left the Georgian town of Gori near South Ossetia, but are not advancing towards the capital Tbilisi, Georgia’s deputy interior minister said.

‘’I’d like to calm everybody down. The Russian military is not advancing towards the capital,’’ Ekaterine Zguladze told a news conference. Zguladze did not specify what the Russian troops were doing.

CNN’s got some Russian official on lying like Baghdad Bob. Claiming they are neutralizing some Georgian tanks in a depot.

Was that part of the cease-fire agreement should be the question.

Just wanted to let you know I am continuing the prayers for your FRiends in Georgia.

Sounds like they could use the intercession of St George on his White Horse.

...wonder if George in the White House will be able to intercede if St George is too busy.

They were not supposed to even be in Gori this morning, and now we are relieved that they only moved half way to the capital ?

Very latest from BBC reporter at a checkpoint on the road to Gori is that that those Russian units that turned off the road running toward the capital may have moved eastward into South Ossetia.

We should air land some Stingers in there right now. Frankly, I’m shocked they don’t have Stingers. But it is obvious that they don’t have any or many as Russian jets flying freely about.

The Russians want to stay in Georgia and make demands of a freely elected President to step down....you have a quick reaction to that:

1. Get the Stingers in there in mass numbers.

2. Blow the only route in or out of Georgia, the Roki tunnel.

Make them fly in reinforcements and hit those big jumbo transports with Stingers...they pay a heavy price in lives and expensive Migs.

Not being a “Strategist” myself, though having studied a lot of their tactics, it APPEARS to be the Russians are trying to create a corridor along South Ossettia at this point... However, the fact remains that the President of Georgia has stated they WILL defend their capitol to the last person (or drop of blood...)

Even so, there are others trying to “calm the world” by saying “No the Russians are NOT advancing on the capitol” even though it is being reported by several eye witnesses.

If the balloon is going up big time, all us armchair generals may end up defending the home front. Think War on Terror. Last night ABC had a story about a captured female terrorist who revealed all shorts of plans.

if Bush and Condi are going to be speaking soon, I think they got some hard intel that Russia is doing a little more than just a casual breach of the cease fire . . . heck, flare-ups are expected . . . but to send a large armored column thru a major city and within 12 miles (by some reports) of the capital is a serious provacation

Then we are cowards.

There is military bravery and then there is political bravery.

Do you have any kids in the military that you are willing to send there?

It’s certainly not in the spirit of a truce, thats for sure. If the Russians haven’t directly attacked Georgian forces then they may try and claim they technically haven’t broken a ceasefire.

By the way, hearing some talk about Ukraine imposing restrictions of the Black Sea Fleet but can’t find much info on it yet.
