“IMO, it was their own blatant stupidity and possibly its own criminal acts (killing citizens) which will come out later.”

There’s some truth to that. At the same time, Mark Levin revealed last night that Russia had colonized Georgia, stealing land from it. That’s what caused this mess to occur. The Georgians are much the same as Palastinians, with the exception that Russia has no religious claim to the area. Another way to look at it was Albanian refugees taking over Serb Kosovo.

The perfect solution would be for Russians to move back to Russia.

It is essentially a fact that Russia wanted and excuse and Georgia provided one.

So what's your point?

As far as an excuse for inaction on our part I totally disagree. Russia has to be stopped now or they will roll through the entire area. Russian “peace keepers” have to be removed from Georgia period. That blatant lie can't be allowed to continue.

Uhm. You must have gotten me wrong. I was attacking those who try to find excuses for doing nothing by blaming Georgia. I fully agree (and think it’s pretty obvious from my other posts) that I favor countering Russia and supporting her threatened neighbours.

If someone has a gun to your head you don’t stomp on their foot daring them to further act. Suicide isn’t productive.

My point is that just because some of us point out factually that Georgia acted imprudently doesn’t mean that leaves Russia off the hook.

My question, since the beginning, has been “why now?” The South Ossetians have been hurling rockets along the border for years, although I’m not sure to what extent Georgia may have responded in the past. I don’t know if this time their provocation was more severe, perhaps egged on or coordinated by Russia as a pretext, or if it was just a matter of a response that Russia knew would have to be made one of these days. Russia was already prepared for this scenario, in any case.

The Ossetian situation is quite strange. The EU constitution (not that these are EU members) at one point forbade the recognition of new “states,” since there are ethnic groups all over Europe that keep trying to announce that they’re not part of whatever modern state they happen to be in. Oddly enough, virtually all of them are left-wing (the Basques are outright hard-line Marxists). Those that aren’t are Muslim (although they’re usually leftists as well).

One of the reasons I think it was so dangerous to recognize Kosovo, a “state” created by ethnic cleansing carried out by Muslims, is that it makes these groups that are would-be states much more powerful because it permits a bigger power - whether the former Soviet Union or world Islam - to use them to extend and legitimize their power.

It’s not a matter of this being the “fault” of Georgia, but simply that it was unwise of them at this moment, particularly when we had advised them against it, to respond. Clearly they weren’t prepared militarily, in terms of their alliances, or in any other way to take on Russia.

I don’t think they expected it, honestly, and the only good that could come out of this perhaps is that it’s now time to sit down and work out a new strategy for dealing with things like this. The former Communist states, such as Poland, seem to want to work on it. Perhaps in fact they could establish some kind of defensive alliance, since I doubt that any of them individually are able to take on Russia, particularly if it allies with Iran, as it seems to be doing.

I want something horrible to befall that loathsome Putin.

He's a hateful, jealous, spiteful little man. You could see it in his face as he watched our Olympians enter the stadium and heard the rousing cheer go up. He was seething.

i don´t think the the EU constitution forbids recognition of new states. as far as i know it´s up to every single state to recognize a “new” state or not. i admit i´m not 100% shure (i guess no one here has ever read the whole constitution) but i have never have heard of something like that.

Your logic isn’t much different from the Islamic radicals’ logic of executing the rape victim.

Yep. People like her are always ready to blame the victim for causing trouble. Peace at any price. We've faced this kind of logic throughout our history. Same kind of weak sisters who blamed Pearl Harbor on the US oil embargo. Or 9/11 on putting troops into Arabia. Back in the late 30’s the Brits faced the same apologists for German aggression and responded with the cry “ Speak for England”! In other words the key thing is what is in America's interest first....who gives a crap if the Georgians provoked it !....Russia being allowed to get away with this is not good for us. Period. “Speak for America”!

You know it is one thing for you to disagree with me. It is quite another for you to make the REACH to telling me that my logic would approve of rape. If you don't like what I say, counter it with facts of your own. Don't jump to outrageous conclusions and counter with juvenile one liners. In other words .. GROW UP !!!
