Obama without his script (by Johah Goldberg)
Los Angeles Times ^ | Aug. 12, 2008 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 08/12/2008 12:29:00 AM PDT by FocusNexus

Judging by his reaction to the Georgia-Russia crisis, Obama's make-believe presidency isn't ready for prime time.

The Obama campaign has for months pursued the odd strategy of having the junior senator from Illinois act as if he were already kinda-sorta president of the United States.

The invasion of Georgia elicited a wan written communique instead of the sort of exciting rhetoric we've come to expect from his make-believe presidency.

This moment calls for more than playacting, yet Obama looks lost without a presidential script.

Perhaps this is not a time for a novice spouting grand rhetoric about a new page in history, but for someone who's actually read the pages of some old, but still relevant, books. Perhaps this is not the time for playacting.

Obama will be chewed up by the Russians. Unlike the Germans they don't have an Obama fan club.

Wow...the LA Times is going to get a bad rap with the Libs if they let OpEd’s like this run too many times.

Russia’s idea of diversity training is enthnic cleansing.....Obama’s candidacy is a sign of weakness, of our moral decay and the Ruskies know low hanging fruit when they see it...

Elections often turn on things we just didn't see coming--drunk driving arrest, Florida recount, SWIFT vets.

It may be that seeing how McCain and Obama react to this--and how comfortable people feel about letting Obama take charge of a world that has refreshed our memories about the dangers out there--tips the scales in November.

The campaign significance for Obama is easier to calculate. He has been playacting at being presidential in order to convince voters that we live in a "new moment" with "new challenges" -- and that he is the president we need for this new era.

It's no wonder Obama appeals to Oprah fans and listeners of rap music. Oprah appeals to people who like to watch and WISH for things to be better; rap fans are angry people who think respect will be paid them not because they've accomplished anything in life but because they have the bling and they're all "badass".

Neither of these groups--or liberals in general--know a damned thing about dealing with reality--they are all about being in the right (as they see it) leading to, well, everyone else just SEEING that they're right and giving them the respect they demand.

Obama appeals to people who think the world will become what they want just because they want it, really, really want it.

Intelligent people are looking at him lately and thinking 'It's a nice idea, but there is just no way this guy can handle the job."

“Intelligent people are looking at him lately and thinking ‘It’s a nice idea, but there is just no way this guy can handle the job.’ “

The real question is what percentage of the voters fall into the “intelligent people” category.

During Obama's make-believe presidency, we've heard about bold action, about the courage to talk to dictators. When faced with a real "3 a.m. moment," Obama -- who boasts about 200 foreign policy advisors, broken into 10 subgroups -- proclaims, "I'm going to get some shave ice."

That's the money quote. Obama wants to be King of the World? Maybe he'd know what to do if they held the war in a stadium. He's totally over his head on this one. Man, I love Jonah Goldberg. I can't believe the LA Times actually printed this!

I too, am surprised that the LA Times printed it.

Jonah always has a spot on statement to make but that is was the Los Angeles ultra-liberal Times that put it out there, perhaps indicates that liberals are waking up to the realization that Obama ain’t no dream choice.

Obama needs to just embrace the pain now, and choose Miley Cyrus for his VP.

Thanks for the Obama video link — he can’t put a sentence together without his teleprompter, his brain is jumbled, must be all the cocaine he did while in high school.

Can you imagine if McCain had stumbled this badly — it would have been on all newscasts for weeks, as proof that he has a mental impairment and not fit to lead.

But Obama’s stumbles are covered up by the media.

Oh my goodness....I didn’t know just how bad it was. Everything he says is either teleprompted or memorized and if he forgets his lines he falls flat. That was horrendous. But Bush can’t say nuclear! so, you know, um...

Editorial pages don't mean c$$p. We'll know they are tossing him overboard when the evening news starts out with a grim faced anchor: "New questions are being asked about Barak Obama's handling of the Georgian Crisis . . . " In the background, there are pictures of Obama body surfing. For three consecutive nights.

That's how they would handle an R who didn't cancel his vacation in the same situation. They used to do it with Reagan all the time.

Really an excellent comment on your part.
I can only offer you my highest praise: Damn, I wish I’d said that!

If enough people paid attention to McCain’s and Obama’s responses to the invasion, then this could be a huge plus for the former. I’m no fan of McCain, but he acted more presidential than the President - who I am a fan of.

I’ll also wager that the Clintons are seething again that the PIAPS didn’t get this chance to be in the spotlight and react to a crisis - rememer Bill’s lament that 9/11 didn’t happen in his watch?

I guess that what the Democrats are nominating isn’t really a leader but a front person who will be the public face of a leftist committee that’ll be the real leadership. Shudder.

This was obvious in one of the planks in the Dim platform, as read by Bill O’Reilly, in addition to helping those “who have lost their home” (pretty nebulous) the Dims want to help those “who have LOST THEIR WAY” (VERY nebulous). I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Of all the soft headed, dim witted, lame logic, nonsense I've ever heard, this was the most absurd plank in any platform ever imagined. And we, the American taxpayers, are supposed to pay for this nonsense!

The dim witted Dems are out of control! I hope the American public has the sense to put the brakes on this idiocy!
