Excerpt -

LONDON, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Georgia is calling for a United Nations' peacekeeping force to intervene to halt its conflict with Russia, a Georgian diplomat said.

"We need troops (on the) ground," he told Reuters in an interview late on Monday.

"Let it be a U.N.-mandated international force, ideally EU," he said.

Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council, would have the ability to veto any such move.

Kicking a hornets nest and hoping the UN will bail you out is just about as bad of a move as you can make.

I posted this on the thread that Flavius posted, but it's pretty close to my feelings on the U.N.

For all the folks saying Georgia started it, ask yourself some logistical questions about how you get 1000 tanks across a border and feed and supply 10,000 troops across a border tens of miles . . . if you didn’t prepare it thoroughly ahead of time — and not just sitting in warehouses. You don’t sit 1,000 tanks idle anywhere they are not needed defensively.

The Soviets . . . errr, Russians planned this and probably manufactured the provocation.
