The vice presidential buzz in recent days has been all about a possible selection by Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama of Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh as his running mate.
But the real vice presidential courtship may be developing on the Republican side.
John McCain is reportedly getting very serious -- indeed, there is some talk that the Republican candidate's staff is already at the vetting stage -- about Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor.
It is true that Cantor is a virtual unknown nationally.
But Cantor, the Republican chief deputy whip in the House, is one of the rising stars of the party's conservative wing.
The fourth-term congressman is a leading voice in the party on economic issues -- expressing the Reaganite view on taxes and spending better than McCain ever has.
He's a former chair of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare.
Cantor is, as well, from what is turning out to be a swing state.
He is Jewish, which could help McCain in several other swing states, including Florida.
And he's got something else that McCain lacks: youth.
At a boyish 45, Cantor is the better part of two generations younger than his party's presumptive presidential nominee.
Still, it should be pointed out that Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, is younger and more experienced than Cantor.
Cantor Ping.
McCain must choose someone with governing experience.
Cantor would certainly take most of the sting out of voting “for” McCain.
(Think about it: Do you even know anyone voting FOR McCain? I know scores of people voting AGAINST Obama, they’ll pull the McCain lever alright, but they aren’t voting FOR McCain.)
Yeah. Because Obama certainly has an overwhelming advantage here, doesn't he?
Probably can’t find an older one
George Burns?
Great pick, especially when one considers the other folks McCain is vetting.
William Miller Part II. Arizona Senator, Unknown Congressman, worked out so well for us in ‘64. Not to mention McCain doesn’t need to worry about pulling down Virginia, he can survive without it, he needs to pick off Ohio, Michigan, and/or Pennsylvania. What the hell does Cantor do that Portman doesn’t do better? Most crucially, we need him in the House.
Obama/Bayh = Bye Obama!
Now that's funny right there, I don't care who you are!
This headline doesn't rule out anybody but Bob Dole, so far as I can tell. Maybe it is a hint he's looking to Fred Thompson!
The left is doing anything and everything they can to pick our Veep nominee, as they did our POTUS nominee.
The question is, will we fall in line with it, like we did with McManiac?
Real {yawn} inspiring guy.

Sorry. This would be a bad choice for McCain. And "virtual" unknown is putting the most positive possible face on it. He *is* unknown.
“Governing experience” -— like Jimma Carter, Clinton, or Romney? LOL.
Sorry, liberal governing is no “experience” at all.
“The left is doing anything and everything they can to pick our Veep nominee”
I’ve seen that, too. They’ve been pushing the lifetime liberals Romney and Ridge. Talk about a joke.
hey John-court the young, and HOT running mate-Sarah Palin
Just go for it and do Palin or Jindal.
