TBILISI, Georgia Russia opened a second front of fighting in Georgia on Monday, sending armored vehicles beyond two breakaway provinces and seizing a military base and police stations in the country's west, the Georgian government and a Russian official said.

“When Bush first met Putin and said he had looked into Putin’s eyes and said, “I was able to get a sense of his soul, a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country,” I knew he was a half-wit.”
Actually, he was right on the money. Putin IS deeply committed to his country, and it’s best interests... which he, (Putin), believes will benefit from a return to the old ways : |

FOX news reporting that Gori has been seized by Russian forces.
Otherwise we will just encourage the Russians in their stupidity. We have to slap them back.
Also, just for good measure, I'd drop a BCT into the capital's of Ukraine, Poland, and the Baltic nations using the same process you described for Georgia.
The NATO is committed...Putin WILL back down. He's stupid but he aint stupid. ~grin~
Shades of Czechoslovakia and Hungary. We had some Hungarian neighbors and I can remember them cheering and then being sorely disappointed when the Russians overwhelmed the uprising. Was only 6 years old, but I can remember their short lived elation.
Absolutely disgusting... This is horrible. They will pay for being a U.S. satellite??? What the...? And Putin said we were friends? HA! I dare one of those Putin sympathizers to post that Russia isn’t our enemy now - they have made that decision already...
I had heard McCain saying that we should "support Georgia," but no specifics. However, when McCain explicitly acknowledged the importance of our recognizing Kosovar independence, I knew that whatever his foreign policy goals, they'll be as ill-informed and unrealistic as the current and previous administrations'.
Notice there are no “peace marches” going on anywhere in the world? Just like the days of the Cold War.
And the libs keep screaming that ours is a war for oil? No, THIS is what a war for oil looks like folks - complete and total domination - no help to become free, just complete subjugation. God bless Georgia and Eastern Europe. It would seem like the bear is out of hibernation...
I was going to bring up Bush’s soul moment with Putin. Glad you did. He was wrong to engage as equals because I don’t think there was ever any doubt in many minds that the USSR would attempt to rebuild. Seems at this point, it is a war for oil and they are taking opportunity to find those speaking out against it like Poland. Building excuses.
The payback to Putin for this adventure should be major new U.S. military bases in the FSU. Preferably on former Soviet bases themselves. This invasion of Georgus is straight out of the Soviet playbook and is only going to get worse if we do nothing but talk.
He will probably go along with that to begin with...and if he doesn;t than it just advances our plan to support Georgia.
Once we establish a defacto and large CAP ober Tiblisi for the initial transport purpose, then we maintain it, reinforce it, and then start a 24X7 air lift into Tiblisi of all the material the Georgians could ever hope for.
At that point, if Putin tries to stop it, which he would almost have to try and do, then we unleash our air power on Russian air units, and ground units inside of Georgia proper and stop the invasion and take over, then caloling for a cease fire in Georgia and a return to talks.
In order to do anything remotely similar, the plans have to already be in progress with those transports and their escorts in the air.
Putin thinks we are too weak willed to do something like that...that is where he needs to get his first surprize.
What is the cost of the Democrat "No Domestic Energy Policy?"
All of that puts the U.S. in a position that war for oil or
complete economic collapse will be our only choices.
You can't frustrate every source of domestic energy
without consequences. Our enemies will blackmail us
to the extent that we are vulnerable to blackmail.
The Democrats are leading us into a real war for oil.
A war we won't have the energy to fight.
They are definitely toying with us.
I think Putin has the gall to do exactly that... I think they’ve been just itching for a few years now to weaken America and wait for the right time to strike. It’s not like they are not already assisting our enemies in the WOT by supplying Iran with arms & nuclear hardware. So much for those here at FR that were begging and pleading with us to “trust them”, and saying “things are so much better now” with Russia, and Putin’s just a wonderful leader. Yeah, right...
And it took us twenty years to undo i...and then only because the last eight of those years we had a Reagan who stood up four-square against the Soviets.
We need to do something to make sure this does not turn out the same way as Hungary oin '56 and the Czechs in '68.
