If Michael Phelps goes on to win eight gold medals in the Olympic swimming competition at the Water Cube, he will owe a huge debt of gratitude to teammate Jason Lezak.
No, make that HUGE.
In one of the greatest anchor legs in swimming history, Lezak reeled in boastful Frenchman Alain Bernard in the final 50 meters to bring the United States home to a breathtaking victory in world-record time in the 4x100 freestyle relay to provide a riveting finish to this morning's program.
"It was a crazy thing to watch," said Garrett Weber-Gale, who swam the second leg for the U.S. "If there was anybody in the world who could do this, Jason was the one to pull it off. It was a perfect touch at the finish."

Most amazing race EVER!!! We had to replay it a number of times because it was so great!
If you think they’re upset in France, maybe we should check out DU. They are very upset USA wins so many medals when other countries don’t get any at all! Yeah, the commentator said he’d done the chart over 1000 times in recent months and saw no way USA would win. (the commentator was himself a USA Gold Medalist in ‘84 so knows about swimming)
That said, it was the most fantastic race, all the more so because of Bernard’s comments. He really should have kept his big bouche shut.
My cheering/screaming woke up my dead-to-the-world husband ... then I was so high on adrenelin, couldn’t sleep till past 3am.

I loved it afterwards, when in the interview, one of our guys referred to them as “the Frenchies.” He must have missed his PC class.
“I’m real glad I recorded it to harddrive!”
I’m so glad you DID!
AWESOME!
“it was nuts! and watching it play over and over, i still can’t get enough... watching Phelps’ reaction—truly priceless... seeing Bernard’s reaction—also priceless... “
It WAS nuts...I just thought there was NO WAY!
He was SO FAR behind at the flip...
GOODNESS ME WHAT FUN!
And the French had NOTHING TO SAY!
WOO HOO!
What race was Phelps was in a hour before this race ? and did he win it ?
I only caught a brief part of the previous race. He did not win, he merely finished in time to qualify.
The announcers were going on and on about the brilliant strategy so I suspect it was just a qualifying race.

I bet the French would have won without that comment. Those kind of statements just get your opponent's adrenaline flowing. It took a superhuman effort, and for a 32 year old man to produce that result is simply impossible.
Now we know what French Toast really looks like!
BUMP!
BUMP!
i saw it live then stayed up in the wee hours and saw it again..and again..LOL
