Kevin Rudd reveals Bush-Putin argument at Opening Ceremony

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd witnessed a heated discussion between US President George W. Bush and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, over Russia's invasion of a tiny neighbouring country as athletes paraded before them in the Opening Ceremony on Friday night.

Mr Rudd revealed in an interview with Beijing Now in Beijing on Saturday that he was sitting just two rows behind Mr Bush when an "animated" discussion between he and Mr Putin broke out over Russia's advance into South Ossetia, a breakaway region in neighbouring Georgia.

The timing of this conflict doesn't make much sense to me.

Bush is going to be leaving soon, so why would the Russians prefer to strengthen the election case for McCain by becoming belligerent when they could wait a few more months and see if Obama is elected? They surely know that Obama would be much weaker regarding American foreign policy than McCain, right?

Maybe the Russians are doing their own American election polling and are finding out that Obama doesn't stand a chance, so they figure they better do it now before the Vietnam vet/POW gets elected?

That all might be a stretch, but still, if I'm the Russians, I wait to see if Obama gets elected, then it's party time. Doing what they're doing now is only helping the case for electing McCain, which wouldn't seem to be in the best interests of Russian hardliner old school communists.

Sounds like Putti-Poot got W's dander up. Never a good idea to get the dander of a Texan up.

Why not? GWB isn't really a Texan, he was born in New Haven Connecticut.

Pass out the popcorn and the iodine tablets.

Yep, 'cause the 'soul' that our illustrious President saw in the eyes of Czar Putin is capable of launching nukes on us without batting an eyelash, and we'll be able to find that popcorn in the dark because it will be GLOWING.

If Bush had any sense at all, he would be putting strategic bombers on alert and raising DEFCON up a level or two to send a message to those latter-day Soviet-wannabes.

Putin sees America as having a lame duck president who wants to go out quietly and with a congress that won’t do anything provacative. In Putin’s mind, the timing is perfect to do this.

Sound analysis to me. Gives Russia about 9 to 12 months.

“No one fights a war unless they think they can win. So I wouldn’t count Georgia out yet. Furthermore I’m getting sick of all the whinning about Bush not doing anything, and that McCain isn’t good enough. NO ONE is PERFECT! NO PERSON IN AUTHORITY CAN EVER PLEASE EVRYBODY! Personaly I would like 90% of all”

Well said, but I am Spartacus:)

“Arizona Sen. John McCain, without naming the president he hopes to succeed, told the Republican Jewish Coalition Tuesday that he saw something else entirely when he met the Russian leader: “I looked into Mr. Putin’s eyes and I saw three things — a K and a G and a B.”

Obama would use "Hard diplomacy"..... whatever the f##k that means.... cause it's different than Bush's diplomacy.

He's a tool. McCain is a douche bag but at least he's got two sons in the fight if it's go time. He's got a vested interest in getting things done quickly and efficiently.

Well neither is my daughter, but both of them grew up in Texas, studied Texas history in school, had Texan friends (he more than she, we lived in an "immigrant" community).

I would not recommend calling her an Okie, even though she was born there, and then moved to Nebraska from 1 to 2 1/2.

I had sworn I wasn’t going to watch them, but yes, I ended up doing so. We all noticed Bush was out of sorts, was looking at his watch, etc.

Putin was sitting right next to him and we decided that he was upset with Putin. We also noticed Sarkozy (I’m not sure how you spell it) of France seemed distracted also.

"Why not? GWB isn't really a Texan, he was born in New Haven Connecticut."

So by that standard those who are naturalized US citizens are not really Americans?

OK, you've made a plausible case for GWB being considered a transplanted Texan, now you're ready to explain his appeasement of North Korea, his all-talk-and-no-action approach on Iran, and what will be the same no-testosterone approach to dealing with Czar Putin's latest aggressive moves in Georgia.

Good luck with that.

Not for the purpose of running for President, per the Constitution.

Nice try, but you're comparing apples and oranges.
